Position OverviewKU's Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Learning and Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University's commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.

The Writing Center Graduate Assistant supports the day-to-day programming of writing support as a member of the Administrative Team in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support. The GA assists the Program Managers of Writing Center Services and Graduate Writing and Support with the training, ongoing professional development, and observation of the undergraduate and graduate writing consultants. The GA leads one or more major projects each semester, such as coordinating workshops or resource development, and assists with a variety of programming needs. The GA provides peer writing support to students through writing consultations and workshops, and supports graduate writers who participate in writing groups, write-ins, thesis/dissertation accelerators, and other programs.
Job Description

  • Assists the Wingspan's administrative team with consultant training and development, including pre-semester training, ongoing consultant development groups, and consultant observations
  • Provides individual writing consultations to graduate students and may lead writing groups (6-10 hours/week)
  • Facilitates writing workshops for classrooms, student organizations, and campus partners
  • Supports the administrative team with coordinating and facilitating additional programming for KU students, including workshops, writing groups, Thesis/Dissertation Accelerator, Fridays on Fourth, and more
  • Serves on hiring committees for Undergraduate and Graduate Writing Consultant positions
  • Develops and updates writing support materials
  • Participates in writing center administrative team meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • KU graduate student in good academic standing enrolled for the 2024-2025 academic year, enrolled in at least 6 credit hours or full-time status
  • Tutoring experience in a high school or college setting
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated in application materials and interview responses
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and deliver presentations/workshops to a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of the writing process and best practices for supporting both undergraduate and graduate writers
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, while also collaborating tactfully with a varied group of campus professionals
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work experience in the KU Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students with a variety of learning experiences and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience leading long-term projects and coordinating events
