Position Summary:

Able to understand and state the WIC vision and mission and statement of purpose. Signs a contract to become a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) within the first week of hire. Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor. BFPC status is gained through self study of 6 modules on breastfeeding topics such as managing breastfeeding and pumping. BFPC gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education - High School diploma or GED equivalent. Prefer AA degree in Early Childhood, Nursing, or related field.
  • Minimum Experience - 1 or more yars working with children in a patient care setting. 1 or more years working with computers and data entry
  • License, Certification, Registration - Infant CPR within 3 months of hire. BFPC certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Equipment/Tools/Word-Aids - Computer, Breast-pumps, telephone, and copy machine
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills - Speaks the Yup'ik language. Good computer skills, knowledge of community resources, knowledge of laws regarding child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault. High degree of interaction with clients
  • Supervisory Responsibilities - None
