Massachusetts Eye and Ear- Vice President of Research

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and serving as a member of the senior executive team and the Executive Leadership Committee (ELC), the Vice President of Research provides management and operational leadership as well as oversight for the research and innovation within Mass Eye and Ear (MEE) and on behalf of MEE within the Mass General Brigham System (MGB). Working with the CSO, the Vice President will conduct a comprehensive review of research finance, operations, and administration to determine and plan a prioritized agenda for the essential operational support for research related activities throughout MEE research. Working collaboratively with senior leadership and especially the Chiefs and CSO, the Vice President will oversee the implementation of these newly developed and currently existing strategic initiatives.

ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads with conviction, based on organizational values and beliefs, toward achievement of mission and goals, and influences change at all levels of the organization. Functions as an integral member of the executive leadership team.
  • As member of executive leadership team, develops vision and strategy for the organization that anticipates changes. Prioritizes tasks and goals and integrates new information into plans to support organizational priorities.
  • Guides and develops staff, serving as a role model and champion for service excellence. Appropriately delegates responsibility and authority to directors and managers while maintaining accountability for results.
  • Supports and guides research faculty to ensure the highest levels of integrity in the research enterprise
  • In research, strategizes and drives process improvements focused on innovative operational models designed to improve services, outcomes, patient throughput and safety and the use of technology in the workplace to streamline operations, facilitate communications, and optimize work processes. Ensures and fosters collaboration within a highly matrixed team environment. Develops and manages complex information and brings clarity to ambiguous situations.
  • Leadership:
    • Responsible for providing a robust, supportive, and compliant environment for the conduct of research at MEE.
    • Manages the Center for Clinical Research Operations (with Research Management), the Animal Care Facility, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Lab Safety, Research Information Technology, and other programs and projects as required.
    • Ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements in order to maintain regulatory compliance. With the CSO, responsible for enforcing policies and procedures for conducting grant- and contract-supported research, animal experimentation, use of human subjects, and research involving hazardous substances. Collaborates with MEE Compliance, including research compliance, and Information Security to manage and control risks in the organization.
    • Works directly with the Department Administrators and MGB departments to resolve issues to support an efficient and effective research operation.
    • In collaboration with the CSO, oversees an on-going and proactive plan for assessing facilities to ensure the appropriate and required space, equipment and materials are being provided, including working with the President to oversee Research Space, working with the Departments to determine space needs and coordinating with the MEE Planning Department to ensure prioritization and timely completion of projects.
    • Works with faculty leadership in the departments, including the Chiefs, the Medical Director of Clinical Research, Associate Chiefs, faculty Directors of Research and other departmental faculty leadership to provide responsive service and infrastructure for research programs.
    • Manages the relationship with the MGB Research support offices including Research Management (IGAs and Clinical Coordinators), Innovation, Human Research Affairs (IRB), the Clinical Trials Office, and Office for Interactions with Industry, ensuring compliance, accountability and high performance of services.
    • Leads and manages the MEE Summit Fund in coordination with the Innovation Office.
    • Develops successful working relationships with both private and public research funding streams and the MEE Development team. Identifies opportunities for funding for MEE research and supports efforts to seek alternative funding sources; oversees MEE translational research initiatives, maintains a working relationship with federal science agencies (NIH, NSF, FDA, DOD, etc.) and public and private foundations that provide funding for MEE researchers.
    • Leads research policy management process.
    • Responsible for building strong, proactive and collaborative relationships with partners within the MEE and across the MGB system as well as with industry leaders.
    • Continuously and consistently facilitates open and collaborative communication among and between clinicians, scientists, and senior leadership. Maintains and improves upon a customer friendly service orientation throughout the operations and functions in order to effectively, efficiently and proactively meet the needs of the research community.
    • With the CSO, serves as the face of MEE Research both externally, and internally within MEE and MGB. In coordination with the CSO, represents MEE at all MGB research meetings, as is appropriate.
    • Represents MEE at national meetings and conferences related to research or funding.
    • In coordination with Human Resources and Department Directors of Research Operations, oversees onboarding process for paid and unpaid research employees to ensure compliance with institutional requirements.
    • Serves as a content expert advising MGB Research Finance on issues such as indirect rate proposals and negotiations, fringe rate proposals and negotiations and uniform guidance audits.
  • Collaborative/Staff Functions:
    • Attends Departmental research leadership and faculty meetings as well as any Departmental retreats as needed.
    • Coordinates with MGB Research Finance team to provide timely reports to PI's, Department Chiefs and VPs.


    Qualifications
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    BS/BA required. Proven track record of developing and managing research and academic affairs for a health care institution or college/university. Proven track record developing and motivating managers and staff to achieve strategic objectives and maintain accountability. Experience gaining credibility and partnering effectively with medical staff to achieve desired facility-specific and organizational outcomes. Proven experience and track record of success in leading the operations of a large, complex enterprise.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    PhD, MD, MBA, or equivalent combination of education and experience in research. Five to seven years' experience in a leadership role in research administration. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and financial acumen required. Solid knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to research activities. Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, particularly scientists and physicians, in the context of a technically oriented organization. Experience in research administration at a university, hospital, or research institute, or experience in managing a research program in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company.

    Experience and skills
    • A visionary leader with a proven track record of having developed or grown an innovative program in research
    • Research or research management experience in an academic medical center;
    • In-depth understanding and knowledge of NIH funding, research guidelines and regulations; experience interfacing with sponsored research and/or clinical trials
    • Successful track record of administrative, managerial, and operational experience in oversight of educational and/or research programs
