Job Summary

The Sr. Distinguished Data Architect role is a hands-on leadership role that supports Data architecture and Platform advisory within Sam's Club Technology - Data Solutions Strategy & Delivery team. This is a newly created and highly technical role positioned uniquely to enable disruptive growth and data-driven decision making across key priorities by leveraging differentiated technical prowess.

This role has an executive level visibility with a huge impact to the business as the core data platform and governance will power the growth of the target market to multi-billion dollars. The right candidate is a Data evangelist and would be required to go deep into specific data management areas such as Governance, Platform and Streaming architecture and work on higher-level multi-domain data architecture designs, transcending functional boundaries. They would also be responsible for mentoring and training a vibrant architecture and engineering micro-community within Sam's Tech.

About the Sam's Club Technology - Data Solutions Strategy & Delivery

The Data Solutions Strategy & Delivery team is part of Sam's Tech Data, Tech Strategy and Emerging Tech organization that builds innovative and scalable data solutions for the broader organization. These teams work closely with Sam's Club Data and Analytics business, product, and technology teams to enable a variety of current and future Operational and Analytics initiatives across Membership, Marketing, eCommerce, Supply-chain, Finance, and In-Club initiatives.

What will you Do?

The Sr. Distinguished Architect role is a hands-on role that supports data architectural designs and advisory for all Sam's Club domain areas. The role will lead overall data architecture and provide direct support and engagement to platform and engineering teams, will improve designs to reduce data duplicity, and contribute to adoption of better practices and strengthened expertise. Work to elevate the entire data platform and engineering org and improve the overall quality, stability, and availability and observability of our production systems.

  • Develop trusted partnerships with Business, Product and Technology leaders to drive optimized platform / product delivery.
  • Bring a strong industry perspective that can help shape and evolve the internal developer experience to be as good or better than other leading technology organizations.
  • Lead and inspire high-performing data platform and engineering teams in omni-channel retail to build and scale self-provisioned, highly reliable, secure, and performant data platform / products.
  • Lead complex technical and strategic discussions that involve multiple personas including engineering, architect, product, and business stakeholders.
  • Drive a results-oriented culture with a strong focus on creating automated data pipelines, smart orchestrators, data access layer patterns for data producers and consumers to enable highly optimized compute and storage designs to support a variety of streaming and batch workloads.
  • Assess and leverage technology when appropriate from Global solutions existing in Walmart ecosystem to build / leverage scalable and innovative solutions.
  • Build, mentor, and teach a community of engineers within Sam's Tech Data and Analytics teams, and act as a central resource to provide advisory on complex initiatives and issues.
  • High sense of urgency to solve problems and in executing them with extreme ownership.
  • Attitude to enjoy in a fun, fast-paced environment.

What you will bring
  • 15+ years of architecture and engineering experience with a focus on large scale data product development in an open stack environment.
  • Should have a keen eye for new technology trends and how they can be used to help grow the business, and a proven ability to be a game changer.
  • A technical expert with in-depth knowledge in building distributed systems and products using hybrid cloud technology handling massive amounts of data. Should have built a complex microservices based platform or product.
  • Cloud experience preferably with Azure or GCP.
  • Digital transformation experience.
  • Strong technical background with the capability of being hands-on as required.
  • Ability to set and drive technical vision and provide technical mentorship to all levels of engineering talent. Should have established credibility as a central resource, utilized by teams to seek advisory on complex technical issues and projects.
  • Depth focus and an attitude to understand and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Experience with hiring and building teams from ground up. Experience of working with globally distributed teams. Excellent interpersonal skills, good with people, ability to negotiate.

Preferred experiences and exposures:
  • Led and implemented a large-scale ODS, Datalakes or Data warehouses initiatives in cloud.
  • Hands-on experience in designing streaming data initiatives.
  • Have good experience in data-pipeline instrumentation, and cost-optimization of large-scale data products across hybrid/multi-clouds.
  • Knowledge of Data governance practice and required tools to enforce security and access controls on governed datasets.
  • Experience in the retail domain will be a huge positive.

The annual salary range for this position is $161,000.00-$276,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance incentives.
