Full time research/animal technician position for a person interested in lab investigations and animal husbandry in a research setting. Addresses the day to day operational needs of our experiments and daily issues identified by research faculty, fellows and staff to ensure research projects move forward. This job involves participation in ongoing research. The position will include bench work, tissue culture, and some data analysis. Lab responsibilities include assisting with techniques such as ELISA, PCR, Plaque Assay, dilutions/calculations, etc. as well as compliance and record keeping for sample and reagent storage. Animal responsibilities include regular inventory of the colony, implementation of breeding strategies, genotype analysis, survival surgery and other standard animal techniques. This job will regularly interface with the lab manager for overall colony management, acquisition and transfer of specific mouse strains, and amendments of existing protocols to keep up with evolving work in the lab. This work will include operations within a BL-2 animal facility and contact with mice infected with vaccinia virus. Prior experience with animal husbandry and lab work is desired, though on-job training is offered for all techniques and duties.

The principal responsibilities of the employee are the management of the colony of mice maintained by the Department of Dermatology including:

Lab Benchwork (60%):

  • Assistance in laboratory techniques such as ELISA, PCR, tissue culture, etc.
  • Inventory maintenance, vendor relations, organization of stocks
  • Record keeping of Liquid Nitrogen and -80 stores
  • Equipment oversight (FACS, microscope, qPCR etc.)
  • Ensures compliance with all chemical storage requirements, expirations dates, and disposal protocols.
  • Other special projects as assigned

  • Mouse Colony and Experimentation (40%):
  • Maintenance of genetically defined strains of mice.
  • Monitoring births, preparation of DNA from tail biopsies and genotyping of mice by Southern blot and PCR.
  • Maintaining accurate records of animal provenance and passage.
  • Conducting monthly census of the mouse colony
  • Strategize and plan methodologies to keep colony at cost effective cage levels
  • Monitoring and assisting Investigators with mouse procedures and experiments


  • Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree required. Advanced education and experience with animals valued.
  • One year direct experience in a basic lab environment
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Experience with both lab work and animal husbandry within a research setting is preferred.
  • Candidates should be comfortable with handling mice as well as murine and human specimens which are possibly infectious and which require understanding of biosafety procedures.
