Job Summary/Basic Function:
Provides psychological and counseling services of a remedial, preventive, and developmental nature through direct and indirect (consultation) contacts with students, faculty, and staff (individually and in groups).

Level Scope:
Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:
60% of the time the Student Counseling Psychologist must:

  • Collect information about individuals or clients, using interviews, case histories,
    observational techniques, and other assessment methods.
    • Document patient information including session notes, progress notes, recommendations, and treatment plans.
    • Develop therapeutic and treatment plans based on clients' interests, abilities, or needs.
    • Counsel clients on mental health or personal achievement
    • Supervise staff as necessary

35% of the time the Student Counseling Psychologist must:

Direct Clinical Services:
  • Provide direct service counseling (individual, multi-person, group, psychological
    evaluation) to Boise State students, faculty, staff and dependents within the scope of
    services offered by Counseling Services.
  • Coordinate and provide psychological assessments and reporting.
  • Provide Crisis intervention and triage coverage/consultation to students and other
    members of the university community.
  • Provide weekly individual supervision to assigned supervisee(s).
  • Other clinical services as assigned (Group supervision facilitation, AODA assessments,
    ADHD assessments, etc.).

Administrative and Indirect Services:
  • Participate in weekly psych rounds and staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Timely completion of case notes and reports of assessments.
  • Duties will be assigned that will require administrative coordination, or assistance of
    coordination of a specific area (e.g., AODA Programming, workshops, outreach, etc...),
    and/or participation on a university committee/group.
  • Consult as need, requested, or assigned with Health Services colleagues, parents, faculty,
    staff and community about mental health concerns

5% Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
  • Good knowledge of: the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Experience: talking to others to convey information effectively; actively looking for ways to help people; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology.
  • Registered Supervisor in the state of Idaho.
  • History of clinical supervisory experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. And an ability to work with diverse student, faculty and staff populations.
  • Psychological Assessment and Reporting -knowledge, skill, and experience related to psychological assessments and reporting
  • Clinical/Counseling -knowledge, skills, and experience related to providing individual and group counseling; empathy, listening skills, problem solving, wide repertoire of intervention strategies, knowledge of ethical principles, mastery of personal and interpersonal dynamics, assessment skills, diagnosis, abnormal behavior/psychopathology, experience/knowledge working on a highly integrated clinical team consisting of Physicians, Psychiatrists, Family Nurse Practitioners, Physician's Assistants, Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Nurses, etc.
  • Supervision -knowledge, skills, and experience related to professional training in the field of psychology, leadership modeling, ethical guidelines, state statutes, professional development, training models.
  • Consultation -proactive, flexible, open communication style, solution-focused, relationship building skills
  • Teaching -competency in wide variety of psychology topical areas, teaching expertise
  • Crisis management -maintain up-to-date skills related to high risk populations and community resources in mental health, crisis intervention techniques, and case management skills based on up to date knowledge and principles of case management.

Salary starts at $83,000 depending on experience.
