The Staff Automation Controls Engineer is responsible for technical guidance and support to design and develop high-volume automated equipment, utilized in the production of consumables used for diagnostics. Advocates for sound manufacturing improvements and techniques to increase production yields and to improve production efficiencies.

Serves as an adviser to Automation Engineers with less experience. Applies best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to build robust automation systems.

This position is part of the Automation Engineering and will be located in Sunnyvale CA. At Business solutions/Automation Engineering, our Vision is to be the Manufacturing Operations center of Excellence for Business Solutions, Automation Controls, and Compliance

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as an interdepartmental connection to interpret/obtain customers' needs to improve processes and equipment efficiency

  • Serve as a technical expert in design reviews and foster utilization of new technologies, when necessary, in order to build reliable high-volume equipment

  • Serve as a technical resource for Automation Controls Engineers with less expertise

  • Generate documentation to aid in the qualification and validation of automated equipment

  • Improve software validation process, and execute equipment validation Protocols as required

  • Configure, program, test, and troubleshoot PLC based control systems and associated components

  • Create, implement, and own standards for the controls group

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • BS in Engineering or related technical field with 8 years of related work experience OR MS degree (or higher) with 6 years of related work experience.

  • Experience with Rockwell PLC programming and development of source code for automated and semi-automated manufacturing equipment.

  • Experience including but not limited to high-speed manufacturing equipment, precision mechanism, robotics, and automation modules such as kinematics, dynamics, motion control, vision systems, servo controls, and pneumatic actuators.

  • Experience testing and validating high-speed/Volume manufacturing equipment.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Electrical design, testing, and commissioning of control systems, control panels, and associated equipment

  • Lead functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity, as well as provide technical expertise, guidance, and judgement

  • Specify system components and suppliers

  • Experience designing custom applications under the Ignition platform
