Job Description

Our team designs and builds the embedded software platform for next-generation surgical robotic systems. We're looking for a high energy, talented engineer to contribute broadly to the embedded software stack.

We are a small group that works in a focused, high-energy environment. We believe in applying first principles thinking, data driven decision making, continuous learning and systematic planning to deliver results and achieve our goals.

  • Are you passionate about technology? Do you want to have a direct impact on helping people live better lives?
  • Interested in the medical applications of robotics?
  • Do you like to build complex distributed systems?
  • Does working in a multidisciplinary, systems-oriented design team sound exciting?

About the Role

You'll be joining the team responsible for developing several generations of our flagship product, the daVinci Xi, to develop new surgical robotic systems. You'll have the opportunity and responsibility to own development of your features, end to end. From concept to cross functional requirements gathering, to implementation, test and verification, success is in your hands.

You will be programming C/C++ systems software on microcontrollers deeply embedded in the robotic system but, you are in your heart, an integrator. Collaboration comes naturally to you which will help you develop robust solutions to complex problems and share them with other new product development engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • In your first year, you will contribute broadly to many areas of software development, including but not limited to:
    • Next generation board bring-up, and implement infrastructure to support mechatronic software development.
    • Design and develop device drivers and their interface to high-level applications for devices such as: motors, brakes, LEDs, 1-wire, secure co-processors, and flash storage.
    • Integrate new sensors (time of flight, hall effect, encoder, etc) and their data into the embedded real-time network
    • Extension of Operating System Abstraction Layer (OSAL) framework to bare-metal embedded systems.
    • Maintain current software and resolve problems found during integration of existing systems.
  • Design and develop product-focused, rock-solid, C/C++ software in a heterogeneous, multi-processor SoC/FPGA/real-time-embedded environment
  • Work with cross-functional teams to design technical specifications and evaluate trade-offs
  • Perform formal risk analysis, develop software mitigations, run V&V and participate in design transfer to manufacturing activities.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience and a Bachelor's degree in relevant field; or 6+ years of experience and a Master's degree; or 3+ years of experience and a PhD; or equivalent experience
  • Passionate about developing cross-platform using C or C++ programming languages
  • Experience working with bus interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, and CAN
  • Experience working on product-focused designs in a team environment
  • Experience developing and supporting embedded systems
  • Experience designing software products in an FDA or other regulated industry or for mission critical applications; comfortable with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis, and mitigations
  • Natural communicator with high attention to detail and commitment to the highest product quality
  • Proven ability to proactively engage with fuzzy requirements, learn how things work and apply that learning to new challenges

Additional Information

Due to the nature of our business and the role, please note that Intuitive and/or your customer(s) may require that you show current proof of vaccination against certain diseases including COVID-19. Details can vary by role.
