Dow has an opening for a Senior Production Engineer / Quality Leader located in Kankakee, IL. This role acts as a technical resource and influential leader for Kankakee Site Operations, applying technical skills within both the Manage Production and Manage Product Quality work processes to optimize plant operations, resolve plant problems and enable safe production of low cost, high quality emulsion polymers. The engineer works as a member of the site leadership team ensuring excellence in site safety, operations, and quality. The production engineer role provides a technical resource to assist all work teams on daily operations, process performance improvement and new product scale-up. The quality leader leads and executes the business, site and plant/department quality and analytical programs as defined in the Manage Product Quality (MPQ) Business Quality and Analytical Strategies to enable the business to profitably meet customer and product regulatory requirements related to the quality management system.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Active support and participation in Site environmental, health and safety initiatives to drive EH&S excellence. Participates in and / or leads Management of Change Reviews.

  • Lead optimization activities and ongoing process improvement initiatives, including projects for EH&S compliance, quality, reliability, capacity, process consistency and cost reduction.

  • Implement and maintain the business/site quality programs which align to the MPQ Business Quality Strategy at the plant level.

  • Provide an effective interface between customers and the plant to ensure consistent high quality service to customers. Represent the "Voice of Customer" at the plant.

  • Act as key plant interface to build or enhance relationships, services and flow of information between the plant and the customer, purchasing, supply chain, research, product stewardship and commercial organization related to the product quality / regulatory requirements related to the quality management system.

  • Participates in advanced trouble shooting and coaches others to learn these skills. Utilizes Root Cause Analysis techniques to identify and drive improvements to prevent recurrent issues. Lead / champion product quality problem solving efforts.

  • Implements best practices in operations and laboratory. Ensures Most Effective Technology (MET), and specific Operating Discipline requirements are in place.

  • Understands and applies skills and knowledge in Statistical Process Control (SPC) technology, to maximize plant asset utilization and produce low cost, quality products.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of the quality management system and communicate to leadership improvement opportunities. For example, raw material quality and supplier assessments, etc.

  • Generate and use quality data (customer complaints, plant metrics etc.) to enable cross functional partners to drive product quality improvements.

  • Ensure plant and laboratory Operating Discipline system, procedures and guidelines meet quality system requirements, as appropriate (e.g. Good Manufacturing Practices, ISO 9001). Initiate changes to procedures as needed.

  • Network with other roles on site and within the Coatings business to leverage knowledge on plant operations, EHS, quality systems and analytical best practices.

  • Train and provide guidance to operations and quality roles as required.

  • Identify and lead improvement opportunities as determined through data analysis, customer audits, Six Sigma projects, and other quality-related programs.

  • Establish and manage the plant quality system audit program, in conjunction with Business or Site strategies. Conduct audits to ensure customer needs are met. Leverage findings to drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead or participate in the review of plant and cross functional projects having a potential impact on product quality / production.

  • Work with business and plant personnel to introduce new products as part of the product qualification process.

  • Provide analytical and process chemistry expertise to resolve process, product and analytical problems.

  • Provide the analytical technical link to the plant, business, and functions

  • Perform complex analyses and interpret and report analytical data.

  • Anticipate analytical and product quality problems and address proactively.

  • Monitor and improve analytical system performance and capability.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree or relevant military experience at an E6 rank or higher

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering

  • Previous plant production / quality experience

  • Knowledge of Emulsion Chemistry

  • Knowledge of DeltaV control system

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001

  • SAP Knowledge
