Your Role:
At MilliporeSigma, the Scientist will develop cell culture media formulations for the expansion and differentiation of cells in scalable bioreactor systems for the emerging cultured meat industry.Working closely with cell biologists, automation engineers and data scientists, this hands-on position is responsible for upstream development efforts to optimize feed formulations and process parameters. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a broad group of technical and non-technical personnel, including both internal and external collaborators.This position will be based in the Boston area.

Routine work will include:

  • Develop and optimize cell culture media and feed formulations that meet performance and quality expectations of product development and customer-driven projects
  • Establish bench-scale bioreactor processes and demonstrate media formulation modifications that improve cell yields and critical quality attributes for a range of cell types and species
  • Incorporate spent media and process analytics into experimental workflows and scale-down models
  • Champion efforts to bridge virtual and lab experiments by embracing techniques such as computational modeling, machine learning and AI
  • Stay informed of advancements in the fields of cultured meat and upstream bioprocessing to expand the team's capabilities and processes
  • Keep accurate records and communicate of results to a range of audiences

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Biochemistry or related Science discipline with 3+ years industrial experience - OR -
  • Master's degree in Bioengineering, Biochemistry or related Science discipline with 2+ years industrial experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Bioengineering, Biochemistry or related Science discipline with 5+ years industrial experience
  • Background in upstream bioprocessing, cell culture and knowledge of a variety of cell types, including primary cells
  • Experience in cell culture media development and understanding of metabolic pathways
  • Use of spent media analysis to inform bioprocess, media and feed improvements
  • Experience with high-throughput scale down models of process development
  • Strong statistical analysis, familiarity with design of experiment (DoE) approaches, and experimental design skills
  • The ability to work safely and efficiently in the lab, plan schedules and arrange own activities to accomplish objectives with short deadlines
  • Meticulous lab techniques, flexibility, innovation and creativity
