Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Yamato Steelis seeking qualified internal and external applicants for the position of Safety Director. The Safety Director will be a positive leader in all aspects of safety & health at the division as well as being an integral part of the corporate-wide safety team. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to, Leading and promoting Nucor's challenge to become the world's safest steel company for the entire division. Managing the Safety and Health Department including execution of long-term vision and promoting growth and development of teammates in the Safety and Health Department. Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years prior leadership and supervisory experience
  • 5 or more years' experience as a safety professional in an Industrial setting or equivalent steel industry experience

Detailed Selection Criteria:

Occupational Safety: Using knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, strategies, and judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws and regulations to promote standards as well as working to continuously improve processes to ensure safety of all individuals.

Communication: The ability to give full attention to what others are saying and communicate information so that others will understand.

Leadership Presence and Courage: Willingness and confidence to have immediate and direct conversations on critical alignment issues such as teamwork, building relationships, initiating and supporting change, and production process issues that arise. This includes the willingness to face adversity and conflict head on.

Problem Solving & Judgment/Decision Making: Identifying problems and analyzing or reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options in order to choose the most appropriate solution.

Coaching and Developing Others: Identifying the strengths and developmental needs of others to include coaching, mentoring, teaching, training, or otherwise helping others to improve their skills to work effectively.

Teamwork: Working as part of a coordinated effort with others to achieve a common goal.

Preferences:

  • 3 years steel industry experience
  • Post high school degree(s)
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, industrial hygiene, and testing
  • Experience with OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program
