GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Research Technician I performs work to support a laboratory's research endeavors and assists Principal Investigators in a research laboratory. Performs or assists in various experiments for research projects under supervision of the PI of the laboratory. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carries out a wide range of moderate to complex lab techniques such as, but not limited to polymerase chain reactions (PCR), reverse transcriptase PCR, western blots, viral culture, chromatography, electrophoreses, small animal surgery, histology, histochemistry, and cell culture work. Under direction modifies techniques as necessary to meet research and/or experimental needs.
  • Collects and records study data. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods in order to develop new investigative techniques and/or to determine the most appropriate direction of research. Synthesis may involve use of computer programs as well as performs data entry into databases.
  • Notifies and seeks assistance from senior lab personnel or supervisor for any questions, unusual experimental conditions or results or needed training.
  • Maintains a lab notebook. Prepares written reports on status of research, determination of technical procedures, sequence of operations, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions.
  • May operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, electron microscope, scintillation center, ultra-centrifuges and other scientific equipment related to research activity.
  • Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general work spaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. Report equipment malfunctions and needs to management.
  • Work safely within the lab environment and in performing work duties. Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Attend and may make presentations at lab meetings and journal clubs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Working knowledge of clinical research protocols
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently

The Research Technician I should also possess:
  • Analytical skills and the ability to resolve technical problems
  • Ability to interpret acceptability of data results
  • Working knowledge of data management programs
  • Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies


Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.
