Job Info

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Center for Regenerative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and the department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medicial School in the Laboratory of Dr. Sundari Chetty is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our research program. The Chetty laboratory focuses on using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to psychiatric disorders, such as autism and schizophrenia. The candidate will work with other lab personnel as well as independently on research projects. In particular, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining and differentiating several human iPSC lines into the neuronal and glial lineages to investigate changes at the cellular, functional, and mechanistic levels using a broad range of techniques from RNA sequencing, genome editing, to functional assays in in vitro and in vivo models. Knowledge gained from these studies will be applied towards understanding the pathology and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g. through in vitro drug screening).

The candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks including helping manage lab supplies, onboard new lab members, and assist lab personnel with routine experiments (e.g. maintaining and expanding stem cell lines, RNA and protein isolations, flow cytometry, histological analyses, immunostaining, microscopy, quantitative PCR, etc). The candidate will also be responsible for maintaining detailed database/inventory of all lab supplies and protocols, documenting and compiling lab records and experiments, and will provide support and guidance to other laboratory personnel. Prior experience with cell culture techniques is highly desirable. The position will also involve collaborations with other labs working on related questions.

This opening is an ideal opportunity for recent college graduates and masters students interested in a career in biomedical research. Interested candidates should submit a CV, a brief statement of current and future career goals and contact information for three references.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help with general lab maintenance and ordering of supplies; maintain lab stocks, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed (e.g. ensuring common reagents are aliquotted/stocked for the lab, maintaining inventories of the lab's cell lines, ensuring original stocks of cell lines are maintained by expanding them and banking them).
  • Oversees purchasing, inventories, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, supplies, reagents and stock solutions. Communicates with vendors regarding service contracts, maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist with documenting lab stem cell and animal protocols. Systematic generation and maintenance of database/inventory of all lab supplies, cell lines, reagents, etc. Maintain compliance with safety, biohazard and radioactivity guidelines. Communicates and coordinates with all lab members to ensure adherence to lab protocols.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
  • Assisting lab personnel with routine experiments (including maintenance and expansion of stem cell lines; differentiation of stem cell lines into neural cells, glia and microglia; maintenance of mouse colonies; and other basic biology techniques such as RNA extractions, protein isolation, flow cytometry, quantitative PCR, cloning, etc).
  • Document, compile, and analyze information obtained from laboratory experiments.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with external contacts. Must be a team player.
  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
  • Sound understanding of lab policies and procedures.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or a related science field and molecular biology experience is required.

EXPERIENCE: 1 year of laboratory experience or more. Prior experience in molecular biology, stem cell biology, and cell culture preferred.
