Job Description Summary
A position is opening immediately for a motivated and detail-oriented individual looking for a position as a research specialist. Work will involve cloning expression plasmids and purifying proteins. The research specialist will also need to complete experiments to quantify antibody levels against influenza viruses and coronaviruses. Duties include serological assays, ELISAs, viral neutralization assays, molecular biology, RNA purification, RTPCR, and tissue culture. Previous experience with cloning, molecular biology, serological assays, and tissue culture preferred. More important than experience, the ideal candidate will be genuinely interested in science and want to learn.

Research Specialist A -
-Serological assays. Under initial supervision: assist in large serological assays, data acquisition, data analysis, and basic troubleshooting
-ELISA and neutralization assays
-Under initial supervision, tissue culture maintenance and experiments
-General laboratory maintenance activities (stocking inventory, monitoring supplies, etc.)
-Molecular biology; RNA purification, RT PCR
Research Specialist B -
In addition to the Research Specialist A responsibilities, the Research Specialist B will work independently to design experiments.
Qualifications
Research Specialist A: Bachelor's Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Prior experience with, or fast-paced learning of, a broad range of virology and molecular biology laboratory techniques required. A strong interest in virology; excellent interpersonal and communication skills and desire to learn new techniques is required.
Research Specialist B: Bachelor's Degree and 1 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Prior experience with, or fast-paced learning of, a broad range of virology and molecular biology laboratory techniques required. A strong interest in virology; excellent interpersonal and communication skills and desire to learn new techniques is required.
Position is contingent upon funding.
The job pay range encompasses the full range of employees from new hires to the salaries of Penn employees with many years of experience and seniority and is not a precise indicator of salaries of new hires when looking at the top end.
