The Research Scientist position will carry out research in support of sponsored projects involving Earth-observing satellite missions and computational modeling that targets problems in weather and climate research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and carryout research on sponsored projects involving Earth-observing satellite missions and computational modeling that targets problems in weather and climate research. Develop, validate, and maintain algorithms for processing satellite. Write reports and publish new findings in peer-reviewed literature. Travel and present research at meetings and conferences, and collaborate with external scientists that are critical to the sponsored projects.

• Advise students and postdocs who are supported under the same projects that support this position. This includes advising on code development, research presentations and publications, and mentorship in career development.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related field; Research experience in advancing knowledge of Earth's climate system using satellite observations as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred: Preferences for experience in satellite remote sensing of cloud, aerosol, and radiation budgets, as well as in large-scale data processing and analysis. Experience in working with data from the Terra and AHI satellite.

Successful candidates must be highly motivated and creative with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to work both independently and in a team, help mentor students, and lead sponsored projects to successful completion. Proficient programming skills, preferably in python, with excellent knowledge of Linux and cloud computing environments.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Duties will transfer from on-line to in-person once university COVID-19 work restrictions are lifted.
