Job Summary

The Urban and Environmental Policy Institute and Department are seeking candidates for a one-year full-time Research Fellow position, to start in September 2023. This position will support research for a high-profile housing policy project to understand the impact of landlord characteristics on tenant affordability and habitability outcomes in California, under the guidance of Professor Seva Rodnyansky. Professor Marlon Boarnet and Research Associate Andre Comandon, collaborators at the University of Southern California's Sol Price School of Public Policy, will also be part of the team and will also supervise portions of the research. The project is particularly interested in understanding the impact of real estate ownership dynamics on tenants throughout California's cities and counties. The project comes with a high potential for academic and policy-related publications in relevant outlets.

The position will be based in Los Angeles, but with some flexibility for remote work. The position may include some travel for site visits in California and conference / workshop presentations.

Job Duties

  • Conduct housing policy research in line with project goals to better understand the role of multifamily housing ownership type and scale on habitability and affordability outcomes for tenants in California cities and counties.
  • Own multiple workstreams, from start to finish, including data gathering and cleaning, data analysis, writing up results, and presenting them to team and external audiences.
  • Write reports, policy briefs, journal articles, conference papers, and media pieces highlighting research results.
  • Serve as key point of contact, connecting project teams, researchers, and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience and excellent ability in constructing, processing, cleaning, managing, and analyzing extremely large datasets, using data management software (R, Python, SQL, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a multi-level, multi-site team setting, including remote team members.
  • Expertise in statistical analysis and/or econometrics using standard software such as Stata, R, SAS, etc.
  • Expertise in GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS, etc.), including mapping, geostatistical analysis, and data management.
  • Demonstrated writing strength for diverse audiences (policy, academic, media, etc.).
  • Ability to perform high quality work in a timely manner with periodic touchpoints.
  • Master's degree in urban planning, public policy, geography, economics, sociology, statistics, computer science or relevant field; OR bachelor's degree in relevant field with 3+ years of relevant professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in urban planning, public policy, geography, economics, sociology or related field completed within the past 2 years.
  • Ability and desire to teach undergraduate courses.
  • Ability to manage junior researchers.
  • Familiarity with multiple computer programming languages.
  • Ability and willingness to write new grant proposals.
  • Familiarity with simple website design and graphic design.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $64,480 - $67,000

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
