Job Summary/Purpose:
The Department of Geosciences at Boise State University seeks to hire a Hydrologic Technician to support field studies by faculty, staff, and students in the Hydrologic Sciences program. The technician will be responsible for managing long-term field research sites, maintaining equipment for field campaigns, managing databases, and providing expertise on hydrologic instrumentation for researchers.
Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision. Exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance, assistance, and training to entry-level professionals, support employees, and students.
Essential Functions:

• Consult with researchers, including faculty and graduate students, to design and develop instrumentation solutions appropriate for specific project goals.
  
• Collaborate with Boise State staff in purchasing and procurement to obtain quotations/bids and secure purchases.
  
• Oversee the assembly and installation of field instrumentation for both short- and long-term observational studies.
  
• Use existing and develop new standard operating procedures for hydrological instrumentation to ensure data quality, availability, and security of data products.
  
• Test and calibrate hydrological instrumentation according to standard operating procedures; validate and analyze data as part of quality assurance and control.
  
• Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of climate and aquatic sensors according to standard operating procedures, periodic re-calibration of rating curves at surface water locations, and collect and prepare snow and water samples for biogeochemical analyses.
  

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in science or engineering.
  
• 3 years of experience working with hydrological instrumentation.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters's Degree with research experience/thesis in some aspect of environmental science.
  
• Technical experience in either climate monitoring and environmental data acquisition (e.g., Campbell Scientific data loggers) or stream hydrogeography and aquatic sensors (e.g., YSI sondes).
  
• Familiarity with metadata standards and hydrologic data repositories (e.g., CUAHSI HydroShare).
  
• Ability to use Matlab, Python, R, MS Excel, or other software for data processing.
  
• Ability to create maps using ArcGIS or other GIS software.
  
• Experience in fieldwork and environmental measurements.
  
• Strong motivation and independence with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  
• Ability to travel to remote field sites and to work in inclement weather (rain, snow, etc.).
