As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. A full time Research Assistant position is available in the laboratory of Chia-Yang Liu, PhD in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The incumbent will assist laboratory projects or research studies in a particular discipline, makes independent contributions to projects, and studies based on professional training or functional experience.

Essential Functions

Research Assistance: 80%

  • Prepares laboratory reagents and solutions for use and or analysis.
  • Sets up, and conducts experiments, tests, and other scientific procedures; prepares any compounds or chemicals needed; collects and collates data from procedures.
  • Performs preliminary analysis of data from scientific procedures; collates data into publishable form; performs calculations; creates graphic displays of data analysis.
  • Enters data into computerized system; maintains and updates files and databases.

Lab Maintenance/Management: 20%

  • Trains students in laboratory techniques; monitors lab usage to ensure safe and efficient use of facilities.
  • Monitors and maintains physical condition of laboratory.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies; reorders as necessary.
  • Maintains lab equipment; performs minor repairs.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Experience

Additional related work experience may be required depending on field or discipline.

Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practices.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and terminology.
  • Knowledge of computer and word processing/database/spreadsheet software.
  • Good organization and time management skills.
  • Good oral and written communication and training skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records regarding events, outcomes, and the associated data.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical and statistical computation and analysis.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement.
