Dow has an exciting opportunity for an R&D Technician located in Midland, MI. Chemical Science in Core R&D is seeking an R&D Technician to work in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory supporting R&D programs related to Environmental Remediation and biodegradation studies of new materials. The individual in this role will assist in method development, sample testing, and data analysis in a cross-functional, multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, and technologists. Safe operation and maintenance of analytical laboratory equipment as well as processing high volumes of samples will constitute a significant portion of the job responsibilities. This job requires handling of chemical and environmental samples in order to conduct experimental work in a laboratory setting. Strong work ethic, attention to details, commitment to safety, and effective problem solving are required as are strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Works as part of a team in the coordination and execution of experiments with research project partners in the preparation, data processing and reporting of experimental analytical activities

  • Duties include operation of analytical equipment, sample preparation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment as required for optimum performance

  • Takes ownership for the safe operation and routine maintenance of lab instruments or equipment, troubleshoots faulty equipment, repairs and/or initiates repairs as appropriate

  • Maintains inventories of consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies related to activities by anticipating usage rates, order lead times, and ordering/purchasing procedures

  • Takes ownership for lab area and ensures good housekeeping; communicates regularly with other lab coordinators to share learning and best practice

  • Assists with hazard assessments and developing mitigation plans; conducts pre-start-up reviews and creates safe operating procedures; works closely with process safety experts and lab equipment owners to assure laboratory equipment complies with all safety standards

  • Actively participates in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group/department/functional topics

  • Summarizes experimental and analytical data in graphs, tables, illustrations, and presentations and communicates results and progress to project teams and leadership

  • Accurately documents work in a timely fashion in data books, equipment logs, Dow internal reports, and patent disclosures as appropriate

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must have good computer skills, be able to learn new systems quickly, and have an interest in effective data processing

  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational and time management skills; capable of managing multiple projects in parallel

  • Self-driven; ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player; keen to collaborate with a diverse set of individuals and stakeholders as local and global teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment is an important part of the job

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and presenting

  • Commitment and attention to safety

  • Problem solver who will research, propose, and deliver effective solutions

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree with an emphasis in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental or similar technology area. In lieu of an associate's degree, Dow will accept 4 or more years of relevant military experience.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 2 years of relevant experience

  • Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory and with microbiological techniques

  • Experience in the calibration, operation, and maintenance of analytical equipment with practical experience in gas and liquid chromatography

  • Experience with industrial safety practices, including the proper handling of laboratory chemicals and the use of personal protective equipment

The physical abilities, with or without reasonable accommodations, include being able to:

  • Wear safety equipment, such as lab coat, gloves, goggles, face shields, earplugs, and steel-toed shoes

  • Work in a biosafety hood as well as perform operations in a glovebox

  • Perform frequent bending, reaching, and occasional lifting of weights up to 20 lbs

  • Handle small vials and manipulate syringes and pipettes with repeated small volume sample transfers

  • Stand for extended periods of time
