The R&D Engineer is predominately a machine design role. The engineer will be primarily involved in producing concepts, designs, performance calculations, failure analysis and drawings for material handling equipment and systems. The engineer will be responsible for overseeing designers or engineering sub-contractors engaged in prototype design and development activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for testing prototypes and creating test plans & reports.
  • Design parts and select components (ie. electric motors, gearboxes, chains, belts, sprockets, etc.) as required for the application based on calculated power requirements, calculated application loads and calculated stresses on parts/assemblies.
  • Understand manufacturing operations and methods to incorporate best practices of 'Design for Manufacturing'.
  • Creation of drawing and documentation packages, as well as simulation or oversight of simulation.
  • Machine configuration and detailing

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • The ability to research and apply new designs and technologies.
  • Familiarity with Inventor (or other 3D) software to design parts, weldments and bolt-together assemblies.
  • The ability to calculate static and dynamic loads and stresses.
  • The ability to calculate motion profiles and timing charts.
  • The ability to calculate and select power transmission components.
  • The ability to create drawings for fabrication and assembly Knowledge of AC motors & DC servo motors Knowledge of pneumatic, vacuum and hydraulic components.
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with others and other departments.
  • The ability to use basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • The ability to work within a time sensitive environment.
  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 3 + years' machine or prototype design experience preferred
  • Machine controls experience is a plus.
  • Experienced using Inventor (or other) 3D modeling software.

Other Qualifications Desired:
  • Hands-on prototyping skills are preferred.
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, kneel, crouch and balance frequently.
  • Ability to climb, ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, etc., using feet, legs and/or hands and arms frequently.
  • Ability to lift, push or pull up to 75lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to sit/stand frequently for long and/or intermittent periods of time.
  • Time spent between general office environment (with normal sitting, standing and minimal, nominal lifting) and active construction site visits.
  • Time spent on active job sites includes subject to noise, being in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical power and control systems, and high places.
  • Personal Protective Equipment required at active job sites.

Base Salary Range and Other Relevant Information:

The base salary range for this role is $79,900 to $110,800. This base salary range represents the low and high end of the base salary range for this position. Actual base salary offered will vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and performance.
