About the Department:

The Department of Biological Sciences and its faculty provide insight into how life and physical sciences intersect and prepares students to pursue advanced degrees or a career in a variety of scientific fields. Students receive top notch, interdisciplinary academics and the opportunity to participate in hands-on research in a variety of subjects including cancer, immunity and aging, and neuroscience, among many others.

About the Position:

The Post Doctoral Fellow plans, organizes and conducts highly independent research for a defined period of mentored and advanced education and training to enhance research independence and professional skills for a scientific or academic career. The position works closely with PI in preparing and publishing research results in peer-refereed journals and presenting results at national/international professional conferences.

This position focuses on research in brain tumor molecular biology and aging. This research is led by Zhihao Wu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas. The lab is well funded by CPRIT (The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas), NIH and private foundational grants. One-year assignment which can be renewed on an annual basis up to a total of five years.

Essential Functions:

• Develops, tests, and evaluates new methodologies, measures, research designs, and research protocols.
  May contribute to peer review and may participate in research proposals as co-Investigator
  
• Perform molecular biology / biochemistry research utilizing cancer and cancer stem cell lines, animal models, flow cytometry and tissue microarrays via in vitro and in vivo studies. Maintain primary cells and cancer cell cultures. Perform survival animal surgery, stereotactic tumor implantation, histology and data analysis. Independently perform bench work and develop project plans.
  
• Collects, analyses, and interprets data independently or with little supervision. Anticipates and helps resolve problems that may affect research objectives and deadlines.
  
• Oversees day-to-day scientific activities, students, and staff in the lab and maintenance of databases, records, and research reports.
  
• Summarizes completed protocols and studies, writes scientific articles and manuscripts under the guidance of the PI
  
• Assists the PI with the preparation of grant proposals and grant reports
  
• Keeps abreast of the literature and emerging knowledge in the discipline, broadens his/her knowledge and technical capabilities, and translates advances in the subject area into research activity.
  
• Attends and contributes to regular lab and staff meetings, takes leadership for own projects
  
• Conducts research using live animals, adhering to disciplinary standards and ethical guidelines regarding animal research and care of research animals
  

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Ph.D is required.

The candidate is expected to publish peer-reviewed articles as the first author, have experience in glioblastoma (GBM) or other brain tumor studies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management's skills with the ability to oversee multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment. Must also possess a strong focus on attention to detail.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to be resourceful, proactive, and seek assistance as needed. Must also possess the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
