Job Info

The Redding Lab at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School is looking for postdoctoral researchers to work in the area of chromatin organization.

Our labs main focus is understanding how genomes are organized into functional domains and how proteins access the DNA contained in them. As a rule, we take a visual approach to these problems, employing a wide range of microscopy techniques to discover how systems work. We combine UV lithography and TIRF microscopy to perform specialized assays called DNA curtains, we also use optical tweezers to understand the role of forces in chromatin condensation, and we use confocal microscopy to study both proteins and chromatin in large, disordered condensates.

Current Projects in the lab are centered around the growth, self-assembly, and segregation of chromatin domains, (2) The role of compaction in heterochromatin, and (3) the histone to protamine transition during spermatogenesis.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD in the biological or physical sciences
  • Be self-motivated to apply their skills towards solving biological problems
  • Have excellent analytical skills and independent judgement
  • Be collegial and work well within a team
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • In addition, it is desired that the candidate will have some experience with:
    • fluorescent microscopy and single molecule approaches
    • programming languages (Python, MATLAB, Java)
    • performing image analysis using python or ImageJ.

The Redding lab is newly opened and excited to grow. The lab is highly funded and able to fully support the proposed research. Furthermore, the Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology department at the UMass Chan Medical School has many outstanding resources for collaboration in drug design, sequencing approaches, and structural biology using CryoEM. The Redding lab is committed to supporting postdoctoral researchers as they transition to future careers, including academic and biotech/pharma opportunities.

The Redding lab welcomes people of any race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, and/or disability status, as well as those with caregiver and family commitments.
