Project Summary:
The Polyiso R&D Intern will focus on a project to explore alternative catalyst technologies for the polyisocyanurate insulation product line. The intern will create formulations comprised of new catalyst materials which will be used to produce bench-scale and pilot-scale insulation samples that will be tested for physical and chemical properties and thermal performance. The intern will receive an introduction to polyiso end-use applications, manufacturing processes and formulations, as well as lab and pilot-scale chemistry techniques. Literature research will be conducted to understand catalytic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Basic statistical methods will be utilized to design experiments and analyze data. This role is based in the CCM Research & Innovation Center.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Develop polyiso insulation formulations utilizing alternative catalyst ingredients
-Conduct literature and patent research to understand catalytic mechanisms and structure-property relationships
-Assist with operation of pilot-scale lab machinery to produce polyiso foam panels for testing
-Execute bench-scale chemistry techniques to produce polyiso foam panels for testing
-Conduct physical property tests
-Execute basic statistical analyses to evaluate relative performance of alternative catalysts
-Present research findings to R&D group and CCM executives
Qualification:
CCM is seeking highly motivated students that are eager to apply scientific principles to creatively solve problems. Candidates should meet the following criteria:
* Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, or closely-related discipline
* Junior or senior level academic standing
* Minimum GPA of 3.0
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
* Willingness to complete hands-on chemistry and testing duties
* Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Additional Information:
The internship will be held on-site in Carlisle, PA. The intern will be expected to work 40 hours a week for the duration of the internship. Limited travel may be required (1 week max-to plant location, test lab, etc.)
