George Mason University Libraries seeks an experienced, creative, dynamic, collaborative, and both teaching- and research-oriented Policy and Government Librarian to serve all of the Schar School of Policy and Government programs.

About the Position:

As a member of the Social Sciences Team & Mason Square Library, incumbent's duties include: collection development, instruction, reference, research consultations and support, outreach, and information management. The Policy and Government Librarian serves as the primary contact/liaison for the Schar School's undergraduate and graduate programs; collaborates with faculty and students to provide instructional, project, and program support and assistance; provides general and specialized reference and research support in person, via email and phone; and oversees the maintenance of in-house and electronic publications and research resources. Incumbent also serves as the Libraries' Government Documents Coordinator. Position reports to the Lead, Social Sciences Team & Mason Square Library.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides holistic liaison services to the Schar School; Works closely with the Schar School faculty in collection development matters and oversees expenditure of associated allocated funds; Assists faculty and students in all areas of research-both general reference and in-depth research consultations and assistance, online and in person; Prepares and presents library instruction sessions for faculty and students in Schar School undergraduate and graduate programs, both in-class and in library drop-in workshops; Provides support for information problem solving, retrieval, and management; Provides general and specialized reference and research assistance, as well as email and virtual reference. Provides instructional services (including curriculum-based instruction, walk-in instructional sessions, web-based tutorials, library orientations, and individual student appointments). Prepares and maintains web-based instructional materials and online research guides within the scope of the position; Serves as the University Libraries Government Documents Coordinator; Works closely with the Libraries' Digital Scholarship Center to support the data-related needs of designated departments: finding and using relevant datasets as well as instruction and assistance with relevant computational technologies; Participates in the work of the Social Sciences Team, including contributing to team projects, providing coverage for other subject areas as needed, and assisting in the selection, training, and supervision of Classified staff and Graduate Assistants; Develops and sustains academic program-based relationships and serves on academic department task forces, committees, work groups, etc. as requested or assigned; Prepares activity and action reports for Supervisor as requested (including identification of issues and trends); and Performs other duties as requested, which fall within the scope of a member of the University Libraries' professional faculty.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should bring the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to this position:

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree OR an equivalent certified foreign degree; Demonstrated professional-level experience (generally 2+ years) in an academic research library setting, including reference, instruction, research support, and collection development experience; Experience in developing and sustaining working partnerships with academic departments and innovative outreach skills; Experience designing and maintaining instructional materials, web pages and online research resources; Wide exposure to relevant databases, collections, and publishers/vendors; Ability to work effectively with diverse academic groups; and Demonstrated, effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following education and/or skill sets are strongly preferred:

  • Graduate degree in a subject area relevant to the position, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Experience working with social science and/or business datasets and data resources; and Experience with Government Documents - U.S., State, and European Union.

Appointment/Benefits/Salary:

12-month Professional Faculty appointment; health plan options and paid life insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self. Salary is commensurate with professional experience and academic qualifications. This is not a beginning professional-level position, and, as such, salary at appointment dependent on rank: Librarian II ($67,500 - $72,500); Librarian III ($72,500 - $77,500); Librarian IV ($77,500+).
