Job Description

OVERVIEW

General Motors is at the forefront of transitioning personal transportation. To enable this transition, we are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to create our next generation fuel cell bipolar plates. You will be responsible for developing the design of current and future active area flow paths and plate designs and resolving complex technical issues. You will need to have thorough knowledge and understanding, be creative, take initiative as well as use a high level of independent discernment with respect to the computational fluid dynamics, pressure drop and flow distribution in developing these plate designs.

  • Plan and guide specifications aimed at developing new bipolar plate and flow field designs.
  • Apply the physics of fuel cells to calculate boundary conditions for bipolar plate design studies
  • Conduct Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for new designs.
  • Generate new concepts / designs with understanding of many high volume production manufacturing process (e.g. stamping, laser welding, quality control).
  • Work with CAD designers to guide the design of the hardware.
  • Develop plans, design of experiments (DoE) and execute testing to verify the newly developed concepts. Conduct thorough statistical analyses of experimental results.
  • Develop software (VBA, Python, Matlab) and hardware solutions to continuously improve plate design studies.
  • Prepare written reports of test results and present results to broader team.
  • Execute tests in accordance to GM procedures, ISO standards, SAE and ECE, Federal Register (CFR) procedures, and GMS principles.
  • Quickly identify issues / problems and report to responsible personnel.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Up to 10% travel required to support collaboration with partners and suppliers.

Additional Job Description

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MS in engineering either Chemical, Mechanical or Related engineering fields
  • 2+ years of experience in advanced engineering or research
  • Experience in developing design or products using CFD and FEA
  • Comfortable with setting up bench / component level testing to understand root cause of the issue
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office a must; experienced using VBA/Python/Simulink strongly preferred
  • Must function well in a fast-paced, diverse engineering environment and be flexible and adaptive to unexpected technical issues and concerns.
  • Basic understanding of PEM fuel cell technology
  • Hands-on, independent, self-motivated contributor with strong problem-solving skills and a focus on innovation
  • Strong organization skills with high level of attention to detail
  • Communication: strong oral, written and presentation skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD in chemical, mechanical or related engineering
  • More than 3 years of experience in fuel cells bipolar plate development
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in computational software like Fluent /OpenFOAM.
  • Industrial experience in developing tests / processes using thermodynamic principles (e.g steam tables, multiphase flow)
  • More than 3 years of experience in Solid modeling (NX is ideal)
  • More than 3 years of experience with GD&T and drawing checking
  • More than 3 years of experience working in or directly with Manufacturing Engineering or Cost Estimating
  • Comfortable in dealing with undefined / under-defined problems
  • Adaptable in dealing with evolving goals and targets
  • Detailed understanding of metrology and quality control
  • Familiarity with GM Engineering Change and Design Release processes
  • Statistics and design of experiment training and experience
