Job Description Summary

Diagnoses maintenance problems, installs and sets up equipment, monitors the function of receiving and processing equipment to assure proper operation. Advises supervisory personnel on maintenance requirements, repairs equipment, and any maintenance activities to maximize plant production and uptime.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Maintains safe work practices at all times and participates in safety programs.
  • Performs and documents line checks and preventative maintenance (PM), including lubrication and inspection of equipment to prevent or identify failures.
  • Performs and documents maintenance work, troubleshooting, removal or repair and adjustments of processing equipment; changes and replaces belts, sprockets, bearings, chains, motors, pumps, etc., and performs building repairs.
  • Performs non-routine maintenance activities assigned by the Maintenance Team Leader or Production Team Leaders and will perform emergency repairs with a minimum of supervision.
  • Performs structurally sound welds and acceptable cutting using appropriate welding equipment.
  • Reads, writes and communicates in English by using prints, sketches, diagrams, operating instructions, work logs, work orders and technical manuals.
  • Performs safety procedures for normally used chemicals.
  • Demonstrates within 30 days of job assignment, ownership of proper tools for the job as specified by the company.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintains a neat, orderly work area.
  • Must use personal protective equipment to perform the job safely.
  • Assists with the training of new employees in the proper and safest way to check and repair equipment.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTE

VISION: 100% of time for inspection and placement of small objects. Must be normal and see clearly, with color.

COMMUNICATION: 50% of time for work instructions and employee work coordination. Write daily reports and log entries. Read less than 5% of time, but important for work schedules, safety, and work manuals.

STRENGTH: 40% - 70% of time moving, prying and aligning equipment. Must lift 100 lbs. in awkward positions and carry ladders, gearboxes, pumps, rolls, belts etc.

STAND: 50% of time completing maintenance.

WALK: 50% of time answering pages and going to and from work areas.

SIT: Less than 5% of time while repairing equipment and completing paper work.

KNEEL: 10% of time repairing equipment.

CRAWL: Less than 5% of time to gain access to equipment.

SHOVEL: Less than 5% of time.

STAIRS: 20% of time to gain access to equipment.

HIGH CATWALKS: 10% of time to turn lights on or off.

LADDERS: 10% of time for equipment repair.

CLIMB/BALANCE: 35% of time to work on equipment by ascending and descending stairways, catwalks, ladders, and work at heights up to 30 feet.

STOOP/BEND: 70% of time throughout the job.

REACHING: 60% of time repairing equipment. Must reach to ground and work with arms fully extended over head for long periods of time.

PUSH/PULL: 35% of time sweeping shop, raking dirt and potatoes, closing/opening doors.

HANDLING/ GRASPING: 40% of time carrying pipe, iron, parts, boards, etc...

REPETITIVE TASKS: 75% of time operating and repairing equipment.

STAMINA (Physical exertion for a long period of time) 75% of time working on equipment and holding parts in difficult places for proper repair. Also, welding and fabrication.

FOOT CONTROL: 70% of time walking around potatoes and on uneven, muddy and slick surfaces.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English. Ability to write accurate information on simple forms in English. Ability to effectively present or listen to information in one-on-one and small group situations with all other employees of the organization in English.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Able to demonstrate safe use of personally supplied hand tools.

Able to satisfactorily complete the Powered Industrial Truck Training Program.

Able to follow plant safety, personal hygiene and GMP rules.

Able to perform job functions independently and with minimal supervision.

Able to recognize and name stainless steel, mild steel and aluminum.
