The Department of Pediatrics has an opening for a Respiratory Therapist. The incumbent works as part of a team of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to manage patient care by using a variety of testing techniques to assist doctors in cardiac and pulmonary research and to diagnose respiratory disorders. The position will be working in an outpatient setting. The schedule will be from 8.00 am - 5.00 pm. Relocation will be offered to the eligible candidates.


  • Conducts tests, such as electrocardiograms, stress testing, and lung capacity tests to evaluate patients' cardiopulmonary functions.

  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists or instructs patients in the performance of breathing exercises.

  • Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment.

  • Reads prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient's condition.

  • Determines requirements for treatment such as type, method, and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages.

  • Explains treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.

  • Educates patients and their families about their conditions, and teaches them appropriate disease management techniques such as breathing exercises, and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.

  • Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs and blood chemistry changes, and consults with physician if adverse reactions occur.

  • Maintains charts that contain patients' pertinent identification and therapy information.

  • Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.

  • Supervises, teaches, and trains students, respiratory therapy technicians, and assistants.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets

  • Perform Pulmonary function Test for Pedi Pulmonary and Pedi Allergy & Immunology patients: spirometry, lung volumes, lung diffusion, MIPs and MEPs.

  • Prior experience with Pulmonary function lab equipment, spirometry, plethysmography, Diffusing Capacity of Carbon Monoxide (DLCO), treadmill (exercise) testing.

  • Interface with vendors at testing equipment and therapeutic device (masks, spacers, ventilators).

  • Orders DMEs for patients

  • Perform Pulmonary function Test: spirometry, lung volumes, lung diffusion, MIPs and MEPs.

  • Perform Daily calibrations on Pulmonary function machine.

  • Perform Feno.

  • Perform High Altitude Simulation Test , six minute walk test, Exercise induced Asthma Test, Oxygen titration, collect sputum and or throat culture and send to laboratory Create Asthma Action Plan for patients ages 4 and up suffering from cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies sickle cell anemia, and CVID.

  • Educate Families on medication management, spacer teaching, proper airway clearance.

  • Facilitate home oxygen, Nasal cannulas, nebulizer compressor, nebulizer kits, Pulse ox with sensors, suction machines and catheters, VEST, cough assist, and spacers for patients at home through Durable medical equipment companies.

  • Order all respiratory supplies including oxygen for the entire building, gasses for the pulmonary function machine, oxygen for the clinic, nebulizer mask, small volume nebulizer kits with mouthpiece, infant, pediatric nasal cannulas.

  • Troubleshoot Pulmonary function machine if needed and keep up with all annual maintenance and supplies needed for daily pulmonary functions.


CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent required. Must be a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Experience:

Minimum 1 years of relevant experience

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
