Indiana University Cinema (IUC) provides transformative cinematic experiences for all. As an academic support unit and a world-class curatorial program and exhibition space, IU Cinema curates unique artistic, educational, and intellectually enriching programs. This manifests in myriad forms, including but not limited to, film series; visiting scholars, filmmakers, and various film industry professionals, offering students unparalleled access to some of the most influential global artists and experts; conferences and symposia; student-film showcases, internships, and practical industry experiences; and community engagement. Since its founding in 2010, during which the Cinema has served over 320,000 people, programmed films from 52% of the 195 United Nations-recognized countries and offered more than 52% of programming completely free of charge.

More than an arthouse cinema, IU Cinema is an energetic participant in the life of Indiana University. With more than 200 programs and events per year that include a unique, innovative, and diverse mix of visiting filmmakers, screenings with live music, academic and community partnerships, and special retrospectives and programs, the Cinema is a benchmark for other cinemas around the world. IU Cinema:

  • Programs film and events that educate, entertain, and enrich the lives of faculty, staff, students, and residents of the community, helping to fulfill the University's public engagement mission.
  • Function primarily as a leading-edge curatorial center and exhibition space, maintaining world-class facilities, technologies, programs, and customer service.
  • Enhances the use, scholarship, and research associated with the Indiana University film collections and other archives around the world.
  • Provides meaningful educational experiences outside of the classroom for IU students.

Job Summary

The House Manager for Events acts as a liaison with relevant internal staff, partner organizations, departments, and/or facilities and assists with advance program planning and ensuring all program plans adhere to IU Cinema specifications, policies, and standard procedures. This work primarily includes managing, scheduling, and training front of house staff for all IU Cinema programs.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Acts as front of house staff for IU Cinema programs, supervises volunteer ushers during programs, greets, and directs guests, creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for patrons, assists patrons with any needs including accessibility issues, and oversees crowd management.
  • Answers guest and customer inquiries and provides information related to guest services.
  • Maintains files, documents, calendars, and program-related correspondence record critical to the success of IU Cinema events presentations.
  • Responsible for operationalizing the management and maintenance directives of IU Cinema's Volunteer program as determined by the Events and Engagement Director.
  • Supervision and performance management for all front of house staff.
  • Supervises creation, usage, and data collation of front of house reports for each IU Cinema program. This includes collecting data from house staff shift reports and adjusting procedures as needed.
  • Briefs front of house staff before events.
  • Conducts monthly front of house staff meetings.
  • Communicates to all front of house staff schedule and procedure updates and training information.
  • Creates house staff shift schedule and update as necessary.
  • Advises Events and Engagement Director on hiring and firing decisions.
  • Collective performance review and goal setting for front of house staff.
  • Trains front of house staff for solo staff responsibilities.
  • Assists with IU Cinema outreach programs.
  • In consultation with Events and Engagement Director, assists in and oversees the coordination of basic and increasingly more complex design, layout, and logistics of events including film screenings, visiting filmmakers, Q and As, live-music performances, conferences, workshops, virtual events, and outreach activities.
  • Effectively communicates with IU Cinema team members (ticketing, tech, marketing, etc.) regarding program planning needs.
  • In consultation with Events and Engagement Director, communicates with introducers, moderators, and guests for day-of event needs.
  • Coordinates with technical staff.
  • Attends weekly production meetings.
  • Works as primary front of house staff for select programs, including screenings and more complex programs, which may include but is not limited to managing set-up for event spaces, tearing patron tickets, showing people to their seats, unlocking and/or locking up at the end of events.
  • Acts as the main contact for university and emergency services during events and actively participate in the emergency evacuation of the Cinema, if necessary.
  • Delivers brief welcoming/introductory remarks to audience for select film screenings.
  • Answers guest and customer inquiries and provides information related to guest services.
  • Leads and manages volunteer staff during events.
  • Maintains relationships with volunteer staff.
  • Communicates with volunteers regarding their performance, encourage volunteers to work events, etc.
  • In consultation with Events and Engagement Director, sets key performance indicators (KPIs) for house management, including volunteer recruitment/management, and measure for success/analysis.
  • In consultation with Events and Engagement Director, analyzes the Cinema's KPIs, identifies strategic strengths and weaknesses and makes recommendations for maintenance/improvement.
  • Tracks house management metrics and trends and perform analysis on a semester basis.
  • Performs research on current benchmark trends and audience preferences.
  • Manages and maintains volunteer shift scheduling.
  • Monitors IU Cinema volunteer social media groups.
  • Leads volunteer usher orientations.
  • Assists with volunteer recruitment efforts.
  • Assists with updating internal house management protocols and processes documents.
  • Hosts tours of IU Cinema.
  • Manages poster distributions.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in relevant field
  • 2 years basic management experience
Preferred
  • 2 years experience in events, customer service, administrative, or related field

  • Enthusiasm for cinema and the mission of IU Cinema preferred

Working Conditions / Demands

The person in this role must have the ability to move through a multi-level facility. Ability to stand for extended periods of time, also ability to move up to 10 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$18.00 per hour

Work Hours

Regular nights and weekend work hours; year-round except for University breaks and Cinema down time;
Schedule may vary due to Cinema's programmatic calendar.

This position is capped at 29 hours per week.
