Summary

This position diagnoses, manages, and treats conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system by examining eyes and visual system, diagnosing problems or impairments, prescribing corrective lenses, and providing treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions if state law permits.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examines eyes using observation, instruments and when medically necessary, the use of pharmaceutical agents to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma and other pathologies of the eyes.
  • Prescribes medications to treat eye diseases under current state law regulations.
  • Prescribes, supplies, fits, and adjusts eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.
  • Analyzes test results and develop a treatment plan.
  • Educates and counsels patients on visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and any other pertinent issues.
  • Treats and removes foreign bodies from the eye.
  • Consults with and refers patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined medically necessary.
  • Provides patients undergoing eye surgeries, such as cataract and laser vision correction, with pre- and post-operative care.
  • Prescribes therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.
  • Provides vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 



Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate from a college of optometry approved by the board which is accredited by a regional or professional accrediting organization and approved by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.
  • Five (5) years of experience typically obtained though four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training. Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities of the eye. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing quality customer and personal services.
  • Ability to give full attention to patients concerns, taking time to understand their main medical complaint , asking questions as appropriate, and creating a treatment plan based on the examination and diagnosis.
  • Ability to use critical thinking, logic, and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively documenting patient interaction in the medical files.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
