PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Performs all work necessary to receive, inspect, crush, store, stockpile, blend, label, package, and ship raw materials. Operates gas-fired kilns to treat spent potliner material (SPL).

The job incumbent is accountable to meet assigned objectives and perform all duties in conformance with Alcoa Gum Springs Plant's Environmental Health & Safety Policy and Alcoa's Policy & Principles.

MATERIALS USED, PROCESSED, AND HANDLED

Spent potliner (SPL), sand, limestone, compressed air, water, leachate, scrap aluminum, scrap steel, lubricants, fuels, oils, paints, solvents, hay bales, gravel, and contaminated process materials, trash, and debris.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Industrial vehicles and equipment such as fork trucks, front end loaders, light trucks, track mobiles, sweepers, platform scales, hoppers, bins, belt conveyors, screw conveyors, hammer mill, magnetic separators, tilt stand, dust collectors, dust collector bags, bucket elevators, rotary kilns, coolers, forced draft fans, weigh feeders, jack hammers, ladders, magnetic lifting devices, jib cranes, vacuum systems, baler/compactor, tumble mill, pressure washers, atmospheric testers, forms, computers, portable lighting, totes, containers, safety equipment such as glasses, hard hat, boots, respirator, protective suits and gloves, fall protection equipment, SCBA, and hand tools such as brooms, shovels, rakes, picks, hammers, air lances, and small wrenches.

DUTIES AND WORKING PROCEDURES

Unloads, inspects, records, and stores potliner containers, performs such work as moving and positioning railroad cars; inspects and weighs incoming and outgoing containers and material; completes required documentation; determines amount of space available for storage; loads empty containers back onto railcars. Operates equipment to place, dump, and remove potliner containers; stops and starts conveyor equipment; inspects material and removes out-of specification material by hand. Uses jackhammer to break up large pieces of potliner. Loads crushed potliner, sand, and limestone into hoppers with a front-end loader. Removes jammed material from process equipment. Monitors kilns to efficiently treat kiln product and lights kilns as required. Monitors coolers to ensure proper operation and efficient transfer of material to storage silos. Removes jammed material from coolers as required. Observes kiln discharge to maintain proper flow of material and takes corrective action as needed. Checks and adjusts water supply to cooler coils, kiln trunion, and water-cooled bearings. Monitors operation of conveyors, dust collectors, and bucket elevators and performs operator maintenance to ensure proper functioning (removing lodged material, lubricating belts, changing dust collector bags, and keeping hoppers clear of obstructions and material accumulation). Maintains contact with the Control Room to affect the best possible operation. Reports any unusual conditions to the shift supervisor. Assists maintenance technicians as needed. Operates mobile equipment as necessary in connection with assigned work. Checks and replenishes fuel, oil, and water supply of mobile equipment as needed. Keeps equipment and work area clean and organized. Support and participate in waste elimination activities (such as 5S).

Perform periodic inspections and take corrective action as required to maintain a safe, environmentally compliant, and efficient process.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Three years of full-time work experience

Two years of experience in an industrial/manufacturing setting is preferred.

Ability to successfully complete a series of aptitude tests

Be team oriented with good communications skills

Willing to work weekends, holidays, nights, 12-hour rotating shifts, and overtime

Physical Qualifications:

Abe to meet the physical demands of medium to heavy industrial work.

Able to stand or walk 70% of the time.

Able for extended periods of time to sweep, lift, squat, use a shovel or broom, and climb stairs and/or platforms.

Able to lift 40 pounds.

Able to exert force of 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds of force repeatedly to move objects.

Enter confined spaces and wear a respirator.
