Nutritionist - WIC Program

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Senior Nutritionist, the Nutritionist in the WIC Program provides emotion-based nutrition counseling and support to high-risk participants. They measure participant growth, explain program eligibility, assign food prescriptions, and document care plans in compliance with USDA and DPH requirements. The Nutritionist conducts nutrition and breastfeeding in-services, participates in educational activities, and provides ongoing support to participants.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct emotion-based nutrition counseling and guide participants towards behavior change.
  • Explain WIC Program and nutrition eligibility during certification and recertification visits.
  • Measure growth and screen for immunizations, anemia, and lead levels.
  • Provide referrals to local agencies for additional assistance.
  • Conduct nutrition and breastfeeding in-services in the community.
  • Provide nutrition care to high-risk women, infants, and children, including:
  • Data collection and dietary assessment.
  • Food package prescription and education.
  • Documentation and data entry.
  • Referrals to health and social services.
  • Follow-up nutrition education.
  • Participate in planning, development, and evaluation of educational materials, counseling strategies, presentations, outreach activities, and nutrition policies.
  • Maintain current knowledge on breastfeeding education and complete professional training as a Certified Lactation Counselor.
  • Assist in training WIC staff, conducting quality assurance activities, and issuing benefits.
  • Participate in administration of social media accounts and communication with the healthcare community.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the program.


Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, foods and nutrition, or nutrition education required.
  • Master's degree in public health nutrition, nutrition, or food and nutrition preferred OR have completed the necessary coursework to be eligible to sit for the Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist exam.
  • Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or licensure with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Dietitians and Nutritionists desired.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole strongly preferred.
  • Availability to travel to multiple WIC sites during clinic hours and work evenings and Saturdays.
  • Ability to handle high patient volume while providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, critical thinking, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Initiative to learn and work independently.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
