36 hours per week; full time; $15.00 per hour
This 8 week rotation for nursing students who just completed their junior year in a baccalaureate nursing program or first year of an associate nursing program is a temporary, full-time paid position, Externs work 36 hours/week and follow their preceptor's schedule.

JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Extern functions as a collaborative member of the health care team in partnership with and under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN).

JOB DUTIES
1.Actively demonstrates the organization's mission and core values, and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.
2.Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.
3.Takes personal accountability to seek out experiences in order to maintain skills and competences and to develop their role as a progression towards that of a Registered Nurse.
4.Provides individualized care consistent with the plan of care under the direction and supervision of the RN.
5.Will learn from RN the roles and workflow of the designated departments in which they are an extern.
6.Applies progressive knowledge and skills acquired through a formal nursing program in order to perform increasingly more complex care activities.
7.Though not the primary role of the job, the extern may perform basic bedside care and selected procedures, Activities of daily living (ADLs), appropriate to the patient's condition under the direction and supervision of a RN.
8.Performs learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family under the direction and supervision of the RN.
9.Reports changes in patient condition to the RN in a timely manner.
10.Assists with the admission process by collecting selected assessment data, applying necessary equipment, labeling patient's clothes and belongings, informing patient/family of unit routines, etc.
11.Performs other various duties as assigned. These duties may vary depending upon the unit, patient type and need, number and complexity of treatments provided. Additional duties may also include non-clinical duties consistent with meeting the needs of the patient and care team.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Education: Currently attending and in good standing at an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: Current BLS certification.

Experience: Satisfactory completion of a minimum of two (2) clinical semester equivalent to a fundamental in nursing course.

Other Job Requirements:
Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.
