Job Info

The team of Neuropsychology Technicians (a.k.a. Psychometricians or Psychometrists) at the Massachusetts General Hospital Psychology Assessment Center (PAC) support Neuropsychologists in conducting clinical neuropsychological evaluations, primarily by administering and scoring a variety of standardized neuropsychological tests. The PAC sees patients across the life span - from infancy through geriatrics - with a diverse range of acquired or developmental neurocognitive disorders, referred from an array of medical specialties including neurology, psychiatry, primary care, pediatrics, and oncology. The neuropsychological tests assess cognitive and behavioral functioning across multiple domains, including intelligence, attention/executive functions, memory, language, visuospatial/quantitative abilities, mood, and personality.

Candidates must have prior experience administering neuropsychological tests. Specifically, candidates should be able to independently administer and score several neuropsychological tests accurately and efficiently, as well as the ability and willingness to learn the administration and scoring procedures for tests with which they are not already familiar. Neuropsychology Technicians also participate in reliability-check scoring review of other Neuropsychology Technicians, documenting feedback clearly based on standardized scoring instructions. They also participate in training junior Neuropsychology Technicians by being observed, practicing tests, and observing/collaborating on patient evaluations, providing both real-time feedback as necessary and detailed review/comparison of records after the evaluation. Other responsibilities include maintaining test record forms (which involves re-stocking, inventory, and ordering) and managing the online distribution of questionnaires to patients and informants. In lieu of a Senior Neuropsychology Technician, multiple Neuropsychology Technicians may share additional responsibilities such as managing the daily testing help schedule and training as needed.

Scoring of Patient Files (~30-40%):

  • Accurately and efficiently score all patient files following standardized scoring rules, compiling a data sheet in Excel for each patient
  • Make corrections on each folder scored following the quality control process in which each file is reliability-checked by a peer Neuropsychology Technician. Discuss discrepancies as needed while discussing test manuals to come to an agreement on the most accurate way to score the item in question
Test Administration (~30-40%):
  • Efficiently administer a wide range of standardized neuropsychological tests for both adult and pediatric patients, adhering to standardized procedures while also recognizing and adapting to the emotional state of the patient in front of you and establishing rapport with patients of all ages
  • Transcribe patient responses verbatim and to act as the 'eyes and ears' of the Neuropsychologist
  • Make accurate and relevant observations of the patient's behavior and affect during the evaluation (pick up on unusual responses, approaches, questions, comments, or behaviors as well as emotional reactions such anger, frustration, or anxiety, and indications of poor effort), paying particular attention to any information that may affect the validity of test results. Communicate these to the neuropsychologist in a concise, systematic manner by completing a behavioral observation form.
  • Use clinical judgment to determine when to consult with the neuropsychologist and make recommendations for next steps (e.g., breaks, discontinue evaluation, schedule completion session, adjust battery, add validity measures, etc.).
Clinic Maintenance Responsibilities (~20%):
  • Re-file and restock test record forms
  • Maintaining testing kit cabinets and testing rooms daily (straighten and organize materials, find and return missing items, ensure all materials are available in the proper storage location)
  • Ordering test materials, ensuring all required forms and other materials in working order and good supply
  • Manage online questionnaire distribution to patients by monitoring requests entered by clinicians, using online test databases to send questionnaires to patients, and collecting/distributing responses to the clinical staff, both faculty and trainees
  • Assist generally with requests from clinical staff, both faculty and trainees, as appropriate
  • Contribute to general upkeep of materials and clinic space as well as shared psychometrician workspace and scoring materials (straighten manuals on bookshelf, empty printer drawers, etc.)
Supervisory Responsibilities (~20% beginning in Year Two):
  • Participate in the quality control process by which each file scored by any Neuropsychology Technician is reliability-checked by a peer
  • Participate in training junior Neuropsychology Technicians on scoring procedures via the checking process, which involves reviewing feedback on files that have been checked, making corrections together and/or reviewing corrections (depending on the stage of training), ensuring that all scoring errors have been remediated in any files personally checked.
  • Participate in training junior Neuropsychology Technicians on testing procedures, which involves being observed while testing, helping practice tests, and observing/collaborating on patient evaluations while they administer tests, providing both real-time feedback as necessary and detailed review/comparison of records after the evaluation.
  • Assist generally with the training process for junior Neuropsychology Technicians as a resource knowledgeable of standardized testing and scoring procedures; answers questions, suggesting opportunities for observation, and act as a mentor.
