Department Information

The William and Gayle Cook Music Library supports musical performance, teaching, learning, and research at Indiana University, primarily in the Jacobs School of Music, a world-renowned center of musical excellence. The library strives to provide collections and services that lead to intellectual discovery, growth, and artistry in an accessible and welcoming environment.

Job Summary

  • Catalogs based on current structure and information. Catalogs material using bibliographic records; updates and maintains catalogs and databases.
  • Creates original cataloging where no source record exists using derivative cataloging.
  • Revises cataloging as needed and edits authority records.
  • Collects and collates data, compiles statistics, and uses compiled information to prepare unit reports.
  • May assist faculty, students, and other patrons by answering phones and handling library-related issues, as well as resolving non-routine problems related to library activities.
  • May oversee library department desk and provide training and direction for students employees working the front desk.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
Preferred
  • 2 years of college level coursework in an area of music such as music history or theory.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of library experience.
Preferred
  • 1 year of music library experience.
SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.
  • Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Highly thorough and dependable.
  • Experience with information systems and web-based applications, such as databases, online search and discovery tools, and cataloging/metadata applications.
  • Understanding of the common security protocols related to Internet use and protecting the information privacy of library users.
  • Ability to research and synthesize information into actionable information for library colleagues and users.
Preferred
  • Ability to read music.
  • Familiarity with cataloging policies and procedures for music formats including those found in AACR2 and RDA.
  • Awareness of music reference sources.
  • Knowledge of MARC music formats.
  • Familiarity with at least one Western European language.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
