Job Description Corporate Engineering Manager

Position Purpose:

This position is accountable for providing leadership on capital engineering projects within Operations. This includes leadership of engineering projects for capital installations $200,000+, project management from design through startup, and providing long range technical planning and strategies for the business. This includes management responsibilities of 5 to 7 direct reports of Engineers and/or Engineering Technologists with varying backgrounds and experience in process & packaging engineering.

Principle Accountabilities:

• Position will be one of two engineering managers on the team and will also be a working manager role:
  • 60% responsible for staff management
  • 40% responsible for program management
• Based on the candidate selected, will take active leadership role in process engineering, package engineering, or program management balanced between existing engineering manager and VP of Engineering.
• Responsible for hiring and developing talent with an emphasis on developing lesser experienced engineers.
• Emphasis placed on proactive program management to identify and resolve resource conflicts & timeline issues
• Lead and engage conceptual design and capacity planning initiatives
• Providing technical leadership on projects to the team to drive alignment with operations, plant managers, and senior leaders in the organization
• Apply the Process Safety Management (PSM) regulations, building code, and NFPA fire code to capital projects.
• Manage external Engineering Firm resources on large capital projects
• Frequent interface with corporate staff, plant staff, operators, maintenance personnel across 3-shift operations.
• Direct report engineers responsibilities include:
  • Capital project execution including equipment selection, justification, Capital Authorization Request processing, purchasing, and installation. Support start-up efforts including transition to plant engineering & operations.
  • Engineers within the team are assigned specific portions of capital projects based on expertise and workload availability including project management, technical design of packaging equipment & paint making/processing equipment, and construction management.
    • Design - Recommend, and implement manufacturing systems that are designed for machine, human interaction, method/process, raw material & environmental variability. Design to incorporate Lean principles to improve reliability, ease of use & maintenance, minimize changeover times, and to minimize production losses.
    • Construction Management - Manage contractors, technicians, skilled trades, and internal resources to safely install and startup manufacturing systems. This includes working with the plant operational teams on training, writing standard operating procedures, and maintenance spare parts.
    • Project Management - Manage projects using the Engineering Work Process from conceptual design through successful startup transition to the local plant team. This includes managing budget, timeline, and deliverables to ensure projects meet established success criteria.

Education/Experience Requirements:

• Bachelors required and BS in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering preferred.
• 7+ years experience in project management, engineering, & operations experience preferred.
• Previous experience in management of salaried direct reports preferred.
• Good project management, written and verbal communication skills are required along with a high level of initiative and multi-tasking
• Demonstrated strong leadership skills in project and people management in a continuous improvement environment in the areas of production, safety, quality and Lean manufacturing principles.
