Facebook builds systems that allow more than a billion people all over the world to connect and communicate using whatever devices they have available. Our systems need to be scalable, fast, reliable, and efficient in order to provide a great user experience. This core technology is a crucial contributor to making Facebook's systems efficient and allow us to continue to scale.To run this infrastructure, we rely on fundamental libraries that are at the heart of almost every operation that runs through the system implementing lossless data compression and managing memory. These libraries have to be highly tuned and to evolve to keep up with technology. Every 1% improvement we can offer at this level is worth millions of $ in efficiency across Facebook's data centers.A large part of our work is open source in the form of folly, Zstandard, LZ4, XXhash and jemalloc. These libraries are widely used outside of Facebook and the team is actively engaged with the broader community. On top of that we build internal layers: to support memory profiling to help teams across Facebook understand how their software uses memory in production and where the costs are; to enable dictionary compression as a service so that dictionary-based compression is easily available and optimally applied by any team; and integrations with internal codebases where necessary.
  • Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics and process for regular assessment and improvement.
  • Manage engineers and help them develop their careers, assigning them to projects tailored to their skill levels, long-term skill development, personalities, and work styles.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional hardware and software engineering teams.
  • Set clear expectations and create a positive work environment based on accountability, in collaboration with the engineering and management teams.
  • Work closely with dedicated recruiting staff to expand the team, including sourcing candidates, interviewing candidates, participating in conferences/events, and on-boarding new employees.
  • Experience managing a team of systems engineers of varied skill levels.
  • Knowledge of compiler optimizers, code generation, and performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, building, structuring, leading technical organizations, including performance management.
  • Experience operating in a fast-moving environment where the workloads evolve at a rapid pace.
  • Experience in systems engineering.
  • Experience of data compression or memory management.
  • Experience of programming language design, compiler optimizers, backend code generators and debuggers.
  • Experience with distributed systems, system monitoring, distributed profiling.
