About the Department

The mission of the Animal Resources Center (ARC) is to assist investigators in performing their animal research while ensuring appropriate and humane care of all laboratory animals. The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Chicago is responsible for the use and care of all research animals on campus. The ARC manages 6 facilities and a business office. Its sections are as follows: husbandry, maintenance, operations, veterinary care, finance and administration. The unit merged with the Office of Shared Research Facilities managing all of the BSD cores on campus.

Job Summary

The job provides technical support in the set-up, servicing, and repair of office machinery installed by the department. Works within standard operating procedures to train customers and users on office machine maintenance and warranties. Expands knowledge in own work area by staying current on new products and technology trends in the industry. Works with a moderate degree of supervision.

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and ARC Operations Manager, provides general and emergency repairs and preventative maintenance to all specialized equipment in the ARC animal facilities. Also provides technical support for the general operations of the Animal Resources Center and the Office of Shared Research Facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and performs maintenance repairs on ARC specialized equipment (tunnel/rack washers, sterilizers/autoclaves, bedding dispensers, water bottle fillers, ventilated racks, biological safety cabinets, floor scrubbers, etc.) and animal facilities (floors, walls, ceilings, electrical and plumbing fixtures).
  • Makes recommendations and/or provides repair/replacement parts.
  • Cleans self-cleaning screens in tunnel washers, cleans out rack washer and sterilizer pits, maintains automatic watering systems including repair or replacement of parts and filters.
  • Changes room air exhaust system filters.
  • Assists in the construction of specialized modifications of animal cages/enclosures and animal rooms, special equipment or devices.
  • Changes burned out bulbs in fluorescent and incandescent lights, cleans diffusers and fixtures.
  • Uncrates, assembles, installs and otherwise prepares and maintains miscellaneous facility equipment (carts, housing racks, dispensers).
  • Loads/unloads and transports equipment within and between animal facilities.
  • Adjusts animal room light timers based on required light cycle for different species requirements.
  • Supports principal investigators with laboratories located in the facilities with various equipment tasks.
  • Supports the shipping and receiving dock, act as a dock assistant based on need/or availability.
  • Works within standard operating procedures to conduct technical equipment demonstrations and educate users on all functions related to the equipment.
  • Expands knowledge in own work area by staying current on new products and technology trends in the industry.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Education:
  • High School diploma.

Experience:
  • Related experience in maintenance and/or shop equipment repair.
  • Skill and proficiency in utilizing shop equipment, power and machine tools.
  • Ability to assemble equipment and parts by welding, brazing and hard and soft soldering.
  • Ability to work with iron, steel, brass, copper, metallic alloys, plastics and wood products, adhesives, resins, glues, and mechanical fasteners.

Preferred Competencies
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate instructions, comments and observations.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interact and orally communicate with faculty, investigators, administrators, staff and outside vendors.

Working Conditions
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • The ability to push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling.
  • Requires 80% walking and standing, 20% sitting.
  • Excellent manual dexterity of hands and fingers.
