The Mental Health Counselor will counsel individuals and groups (including youth and parents) to promote optimum mental health. The Mental Health Counselor will help individuals deal with anxiety; depression; thoughts of suicide; family, parenting, and school problems; stress management; and issues associated with mental and emotional health. This Mental Health Counselor will provide such services at the Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment Program (CAMAT; www.miami.edu/childanxiety) on the Coral Gables campus and at UM School Health Initiative clinic sites in the Overtown and North Miami-area community using evidence-based treatment protocols and as part of research studies. Participation in CAMAT outreach activities may be required. Fluency in Spanish sufficient to provide therapy to youth and families in this language is highly desired.

The Licensed Mental Health Counselor works with individuals, families, and groups in treating mental, behavioral, and emotional problems and disorders. This position provides specialized knowledge in substance abuse, domestic abuse, grief counseling, workplace problems, and management consultation.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Advocates for and helps clients gain access to resources while confronting their personal issues.
  • Counsels and provides crisis intervention for patients, including assessment and treatment of behavioral problems.
  • Coaches patients on how to manage ongoing health conditions.
  • Provides therapy to help patients make positive behavior changes.
  • Assists patients and their families through individual, group, and education conferences to understand, accept, and follow treatment recommendations.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling programs and clients' progress in resolving identified problems and moving toward defined objectives.
  • Refers patients and their families to specialized treatment programs in accordance with their needs, and monitors and evaluates their progress.
  • Collaborates with other departments to integrate care where needed.
  • Maintains current and appropriate documentation in patient chart.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records relating to clients' treatment.
  • Acts as a mandated reporter in suspected child abuse cases.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises Masters-level practicum students at CAMAT in evidence-based treatment protocol delivery.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provides evidence-based therapy approaches to youth participants and their family members, individually and in group sessions, in person and via telehealth, to assist with reduction of anxiety, depression or related concerns, and to improve quality of life. Maintains confidentiality of records relating to participant treatment. Follows IRB-protocol driven requirements for maintaining records in a timely fashion.
  • Seeks continuous improvement in the quality of evidence-based service delivery through participation in related training opportunities, including participation in case review meetings, video- or in-person trainings, behavioral rehearsal and co-supervision activities in CAMAT and at School Health Initiative sites.
  • Collects information about youth participants and families through interviews, observations, and questionnaires. Prepares and maintains treatment records and reports.
  • Evaluates clients physical or mental condition based on review of client information. Develops and implements treatment plans based on protocol requirements, with enhancements based on clinician experience and knowledge. Acts as a youth client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Liaisons professionally with CAMAT and School Health Initiative staff, inclusive of other professionals at treatment sites, including schools. Participates in outreach activities to inform the South Florida community about clinical and research-based services via CAMAT and School Health Initiative sites.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master's Degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Mental Health Counselor License

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
