Position Description :

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University seeks a Scenic Artist (Lecturer), starting Fall 2024. This is a 9-month faculty position serving as Scenic Art Supervisor and instructor of scenic art classes.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach one course per semester (Beginning or Advanced Scenic Art).
  • Responsible for scenic art on 8-10 departmental productions per year (4 shows on our large proscenium stage and 4-6 shows in our smaller black box and studio spaces).
  • Provide preliminary costing, administer budgets, and handle scenic art purchasing for departmental productions.
  • Train and supervise student scenic artists in our large pre-professional theatre technology program.
  • Attend two technical rehearsals per production.
  • Attend all weekly production meetings for departmental productions.
  • Attend all Design Technology and Management Area meetings.
  • Maintain regular schedule on campus of weekly office hours and shop hours for departmental productions.
Occasional night and weekend work will be required. This position is subject to the availability of funds.Required Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of scenic art experience in theatre and/or other commercial applications.
  • Demonstrated strong art skills.
  • Demonstrated record of effective communication, collaboration, and collegiality.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in scenic art or related field.
  • Experience costing and budgeting paint for production.
  • University teaching experience.
  • Successful record of mentorship.
  • Demonstrated organizational and management skills including proficiency in handling multiple projects with overlapping timelines.
  • Demonstrated successful collaborations with designers and artisans.
