Position Overview

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will provide support for the mechanical portion of capital engineering projects. These capital projects incorporate new technologies requiring process and equipment expertise for construction, commissioning, and startup phases.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities

  • Act as a mechanical subject matter expert for equipment in various areas of the recycle and remelt processes, including the cold end, hot end, and casting areas.
  • Conduct plant equipment assessments to understand the site's equipment and processes. Identify and document opportunities for improvement, and possible solutions. Work with the plants to resolve priority action items.
  • Provide support to customers with regards to equipment for day to day troubleshooting and for larger capital projects.
  • Utilize CAD software such as Solidworks for design support and equipment improvements.
  • Work with external suppliers on the design and testing of equipment.
  • Maintain patent reviews / invention records / patent applications during initial product design work. Participate in projects that generate IP.
  • Responsible for the quality of assignments with moderate scope and complexity involving application of standard scientific practices, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Propose, justify, and lead moderately sophisticated projects for a site or segments of larger projects with regional or global impact. Work cohesively with teams of other specialists to implement project objectives.
  • Lead and coordinate schedules for clear communications with project team and project stakeholders.
  • Plan for resources and expenditures that impact project timelines.
  • Deliver data, reports, and communication to project stakeholders.
  • Use equipment in a safe operating manner.
  • Perform all of the above responsibilities with a safety-focused attitude.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong understanding of aluminum recycling process and equipment.
  • High level experience with Solidworks design software.
  • Intermediate experience with drafting techniques.
  • High level skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Utilizes sound engineering and time leadership skills to accomplish a wide variety of technical tasks on the plant/regional level.
  • Considers fundamental aspects in problem solving (e.g. economics, operating, maintenance and technical) in area of responsibility.
  • Able to effectively present technical information to peers or superiors in the technical community.
  • Confirmed ability to work independently as well as lead/participate on teams and work in a matrix environment.
  • Proven experience as a self-starter, who effectively manages multiple tasks, achieves results with minimal direction and possesses excellent documentation and record-keeping skills.
  • Position will require travel to support customer base, build understanding of prospective technologies, and support capital projects. Ability to travel globally up to 50% annually depending on project needs.
  • Knowledge specific to rolled aluminum products and related processes, with the ability to implement and identify simple or site-specific process improvements preferred.
