Job Description

As a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, explore new technology areas, and establish technical plans. You will conduct research, simulations, and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas. You'll also write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research.

Who You Are

We need your help to execute scientific and/or engineering research with the goal of generating new knowledge and innovative technologies in laser welding research, process development, validation, implementation, and performance characterization for the next generation of EV batteries. In this role, you'll apply in-depth knowledge of scientific principles and state-of-the-art research methodologies to address battery joining configurations.

  • Collaborate closely with cross functional teams
  • Generate ideas, suggest new project areas and establish/execute detailed technical plans
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility
  • Develop corporate contacts and represent GM effectively to the external technical community
  • Collaborate with global technical teams and participate in technical discussions as the expert in battery joining technology
  • Initiate problem resolution while driving toward completion of tasks

Additional Job Description

What You Need
  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Material Science, or Civil Engineering
  • 2-4 proven years of experience with laser welding and laser optics
  • Detailed understanding of scientific principles and research methodology related to welding and laser welding technologies
  • Experience or exposure to battery cell or module manufacturing processes and battery quality inspection systems
  • Ability and willingness to travel for troubleshooting or technology implementation in plants
  • Technical leadership skills with high level of analytical and experimental ability
  • Familiarity with analytical tools and experimental techniques as appropriate
  • Advanced training in theoretical and applied science/engineering (computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer and finite element/difference methods)
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods collaborating with GM internal & external customers
  • Strong desire and initiative in skill development
  • Resourcefulness to work in different technical areas
  • Ability to work optimally on multiple projects
