West Virginia University Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources is currently accepting applications for a Lane Innovation Hub Electronics Makerspace Supervisor.

Lane Innovation Hub (LIH) Electronics Makerspace Supervisor position is to oversee daily operations and maintenance in the LIH Makerspace Electronics Prototyping Lab. Main tasks include training and supervising trained users to ensure the safety of the user, occupants, and electronics equipment.

What you'll do: 
  • Oversee daily operations and maintenance in the LIH Makerspace Electronics Prototyping Lab.
  • Manage, maintain, and operate a variety of LIH Makerspace electronics fabrication and testing equipment used to perform daily tasks and activities of student projects, researchers, and external clients.  
  • Develop, schedule, and instruct electronics prototyping workshops for internal users.
  • Assist students, researchers and external clients in programming and assist with building and designing electronic systems. 
  • Assist engineering courses, student projects, and other users in engineering design tasks. Make suggestions and provide feedback on design changes to users based on machine capabilities.  
  • Assist in testing and troubleshooting electrical circuits and electromechanical systems.
  • Work with Lane Innovation Hub and Statler College Safety Officers to create and document user training requirements and lab safety protocols for Lane Innovation Hub facilities. Work with LIH Director to develop plan to coordinate facility access with satisfactory completion of equipment utilization and safety trainings.
  • Develop, maintain, and perform trainings/workshops with courses and research projects, personal projects, and external users to ensure the safe operations of the equipment.  Decide depth of training based on the hazardous nature of each piece of equipment and the corresponding task being performed. Assess trainings on a quarterly basis and revise as necessary.  
  • Oversee trained and qualified facilities users to ensure the safety of the user, occupants, and equipment.  Provide guidance and oversight when necessary and guarantee that procedures and protocols are upheld. Take the necessary action to safeguard users, employees, and facilities within Lane Innovation Hub guidelines.    
  • Create an access schedule and staffing plan for use of the facilities including internal users for recognized courses and research projects, personal projects, and users external to the institution.  Monitor plan and adjust as needed to maximize facility availability and satisfy user work requests. 
  • Create and maintain an inventory of the LIH Makerspace Electronics Prototyping Lab equipment capabilities.  Assess usage data to determine the volume on specific equipment is sufficient for and the correct capabilities are being offered for engineering course curriculum.  Ensure that the equipment remains relevant in the industry.  Make suggestions for changes to the LIH Director within the Stater College Dean’s Office.
  • Assist the operations of the Lane Innovation Hub, including but not limited to machining, welding, fabricating, 2D cutting, 3D printing, user training, community outreach services. Maintain operating knowledge of all major equipment located in the Lane Innovation Hub. 
  • Assist new Lane Innovation Hub users trying to gain access to the facility.
  • Serve as a resource for other maker spaces and innovation initiatives on campus.  Work with students, faculty, staff, and community to support development and operations of Lane Innovation Hub programs.  
  • Work with college K-12 outreach staff to develop STEM learning activities. Work with college recruitment staff to assist with recruitment events within the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Emphasize the necessity of designing, prototyping, and testing process and the capabilities to facility users.  
  • Support engineering courses and student projects by teaching continuing education workshops and individual machine trainings.  Encourage better design around manufacturing and fabrication equipment in the Innovation Hub.
  • Administer billing, expense, and inventory systems for Innovation Hub facilities.  Ensure proper rates are being applied to each activity, equipment usage and expenses are being recorded appropriately and accurately, and sufficient supply inventory is available to meet customer needs.  Ensure that metrics for equipment usage, inventory, and staff usage are captured and used to guarantee that the needs of students, instructional courses, research, and external users can be met. 
  • Assist with other functions and tasks in the Innovation Hub as needed. 


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in the following:
    • Working in a customer service-oriented environment
  • A minimum of six (6) months experience in the following:
    • Experience in creating projects with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or comparable system.
    • Experience in soldering electronic components
    • Reading and understanding technical documents, diagrams, and/or drawings
  • Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrates an ability to select proper processes, techniques, and tools during fabrication
  • Demonstrates an ability to organize information, read designs, wiring diagrams, or part drawings and relay any inconsistencies to customers
  • Demonstrates an ability to be customer oriented and work effectively with a diverse group of individuals
  • Demonstrates an ability to perform supervisory duties and support team efforts
  • Demonstrates an ability to utilize electronic systems for management activities and billing procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various operating systems, (i.e. Windows, Mac, and/or Linux-based systems)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of programming
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical circuit design
  • Demonstrates an ability to teach users or other shop personnel necessary skills
  • Ability to learn institutional requirements for the protection of intellectual property, technology transfer, and export control
  • Ability to teach procedures and principles related to electronic design and programming
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Ability to apply specific institutional or college policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge for accounting functions, procurement procedures, and project management
