Job Description
The laboratory technician will carry out experiments to examine the assembly of nucleosomes with the Sp lesion and the excision of the Sp lesion from those assemblies. She will also manage the supplies, facilities, instruments, and undergraduate researchers in the laboratory.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Carry out experiments proposed in NIH grant "Effect of the Spiroiminodihydantoin Lesion on DNA Base Pair Opening Dynamics, Nucleosome Assembly, and Base Excision Repair"
  • Order chemicals and supplies, track orders, insure appropriate storage on arrival, keep track of expenditures, and approve payment in Workday.
  • Keep lab clean and orderly, including overseeing cleanup by student researchers and insuring proper waste disposal.
  • Synthesize, purify, and characterize DNA oligonucleotide assemblies and protein complexes.
  • Keep equipment and instruments running, including cleaning and repairing small equipment and calibrating pipettes, requesting repairs and updates by LTS and Science Center staff, and ordering and supervising outside repair services as necessary.
  • Supervise undergraduate researchers to assure general compliance to safety guidelines, written lab protocols and SOP's, and appropriate notetaking and file storage protocols.

  • Careful note-taking and file storage to document all experiments.
  • Consistent measurement of controls.
Supervisor Responsibilities
  • Supervise undergraduate researchers to assure general compliance to safety guidelines, written lab protocols and SOP's, and appropriate note-taking and file storage protocols.
Education Required
  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry or allied field.
Experience Required
  • >1 year of undergraduate research experience in biochemistry of nucleic acids
Skills and Abilities Required
  • Experience with high pressure liquid chromatography, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, gel electrophoresis, and fluorescence spectroscopy.
Other
