Instructional Technologist

Job Summary:

Evaluates, develops, provides, coordinates, oversees, and promotes digital media services and instructional technology use and innovation in support of the teaching and learning needs of the college faculty, students, and staff. As a member of the Spelman Technology Services (STS) division this position strives to ensure consistency in its communication, actions, its strategic focus and digitalization and innovation. This position is also responsible for supporting the mission of Spelman College by delivering technology, services, solutions and guidance to Spelman faculty, staff, students and the community in a professional, exemplary, service oriented collaborative manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates workshops and one-on-one training for faculty and students on the use of educational technology applications and equipment.
  • Analyzes, researches, and evaluates emerging technologies related to Learning Management Systems, ePortfolios, and other educational technology initiatives supported by the College.
  • Provides workshops and one-on-one support to train faculty to use Moodle in their classes
  • Partners with instructional departments, and teams to develop and provide tutorials, guidelines, information, and support to faculty and students.
  • Monitors feedback from faculty, students, and staff to continuously improve digital media services, instructional technology uses and innovation, and corresponding delivery methods.
  • Assists teams in the design and development of teaching materials using educational technologies.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of professional development training, relating to technology for increased productivity.
  • Conducts research on computer hardware and software for instructional support; trends in the use of technology in education and instructional technology.
  • Available for on-call and/or emergency response and support as needed.
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design or related field plus a minimum of three years experience in computing support required. Master's degree preferred. Experience and/or coursework in instructional technology and experience in providing computing support at a college or university required. Current knowledge of digital media and instructional technology delivery methods, services, applications theories, tools, principles, and methodologies required.To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of principle and practices of instructional design and e-learning and familiarity with multimedia and web design technology. The work of this position requires experience in training users individually and within a group setting; experience with a course management system and other instructional technologies; and the ability to understand and present complex technical issues. Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide technical assistance and solve computing problems are essential for this position. The work of this position requires the ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team. Excellent writing, editing, and public-speaking skills and some experience in project planning and project management are important. Excellent customer service skills, the ability to adapt to changing technologies, changing priorities and the ability to handle multiple tasks at once are essential. Excellent oral communication skills are required when presenting information and responding to questions from students, parents, employees, and the general public in one-on-one or group situations. Also, must be able to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as professional journals, software and hardware documentation, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Good proofreading skills are essential.Must be customer service oriented and able to work independently or in a team environment, with the ability to perform advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of PC hardware, Mac hardware, operating systems, and web publishing software also is required. Web authoring, training and multimedia development software (i.e, Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Fireworks CS3, Camtasia, Captivate, etc.) is also preferred.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear, stand, sit, walk, and to use hands to operate computers and to move items. The employee is occasionally required to: climb, stoop or kneel or crouch, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
