Job Description - Infrastructure Engineer - Full Time 2nd shift

Description

The Infrastructure Engineer's primary responsibility is to develop and execute against a consistent patch/release management schedule that is performed during non-business hours (2nd shift) to minimize impact to business operations. The role is responsible for researching patches and upcoming software releases, and determining the appropriate tasks, resources, and timeframes for deployment. Changes are in alignment with IT policies and procedures where changes are tested first in CHC's test environment (where applicable), back-up and back-out plans are reviewed as part of IT's change management process, and software updates are proactively communicated, deployed, and monitored. This position will assist in monitoring and trouble-shooting after-hours support for other system administration duties such as IT Infrastructure, Windows Active Directory, and Exchange management as needed.

The position will also work in close coordination with the IT Security group to ensure systems are secured and risks are managed / mitigated in a timely manner.

Attention to detail, the ability to comprehend and communicate technical release notes in non-technical manner, and determining the appropriate activities and monitoring reports are required.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Lead in the development and execution of a consistent patch / release management maintenance schedule that meet IT, Security, and business requirements to maintain compliance for software updates.
  • Creates and executes against scheduled maintenance windows following all IT policies, procedures and communication protocols.
  • Participates in Disaster Recovery planning and implementation of all critical systems
  • Acquisition & Deployment
  • Keeps abreast of software releases and reviews notes for compatibility and installation procedures. Gathers system requirements and makes recommendations to senior IT management on which releases are appropriate for specific systems.
  • Deploys and configures environments in support of business initiatives and coordinates tasks and timetables with project manager, business units, and / or IT groups.
  • Plans and implements server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches. Ensures patches/releases are installed properly, tested in a test environment first and then again after Production installation, and documents all associated procedures.
  • Works in conjunction with business in determining appropriate maintenance windows to meet patch cadence while minimizing the impact to business operations.
  • Performs appropriate back-ups as needed before applying patches/ upgrading system and is able to articulate back out plan if implementation fails.
  • Completes patch management agent installs and resolve issue with non-functioning agents.

Operational Management
  • Performs system administration tasks including Active Directory user and group management, Exchange, and SharePoint activities as required.
  • Proactive utilizes CHC tools and reports to effectively manage systems and applications.
  • Proactively monitors capacity and performance of systems and informs IT management of any thresholds reached or surpassed.
  • Works in coordination with IT Security team to execute emergency (zero day) patch deployments in a timely fashion
  • Proactively follows all IT management policies and procedures.
  • Engages to understand Group policy practices; Tests and deploys changes as required.
  • Proactively works with hardware and software distribution vendors to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Performs routine audits of patching activity to confirm compliance with IT standards and practices. Deviations are reported to IT management in a timely manner.
  • Recommends, participates, and implements system enhancements in alignment with best practices that will improve the performance and reliability of the systems.
  • Participates and executes disaster tolerance and recovery tests.
  • Effectively communicates with all levels of the organization, including internal and external customers, in written and oral format.

Formal Education & Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in the field of Information Technology or Computer science with 5+ years equivalent work experience preferred, or Associates degree with 7+ years of experience.
  • The following certifications are highly desired:
    • ITIL
    • MCSA

Knowledge & Experience
  • 5+ years, experience with software distribution programs (Dell Kace, WSUS, and SCCM)
  • 5+ years, experience with server/desktop operating systems and applications (Windows Server 2012-2019, Windows 10, Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Microsoft Office, Linux)
  • 5+ years, experience troubleshooting server and network configuration issues.
  • 5+ years' experience with infrastructure monitoring and alerting tools.
  • 5+ years' experience with virtual infrastructure technologies (VMWare).
  • Knowledge of current protocols and standards, including TCP/IP.
  • Understanding of orchestration and automation methodologies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of system flow charts, data processing concepts, and telecommunications principles.
  • Knowledge and experience with hyper-converged technologies and SAN infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and experience with backup and restore technologies. (Veeam and Exagrid)
  • Experience in a Managed Services environment is a plus.
  • Experience in Public Cloud architectures (Azure/AWS) are a plus.
