Summary Statement

The City of Boise is actively seeking multiple skilled Industrial Mechanics to join our Water Renewal Team . This role plays a critical part in keeping our city clean and safe. Positions are available at both our West Boise and Lander St Facilities.
Industrial Mechanic I
$21.25-$23.50 hourly

  • Works a flexible schedule
  • Performs skilled maintenance on a variety of complex mechanical systems in advance water renewal (wastewater treatment) facilities and other public works utilities
  • Installs, operates, repairs and troubleshoots industrial equipment
  • Operates and maintains light, medium, and heavy equipment
  • Work is performed under general oversight and requires independent judgment and initiative
Industrial Mechanic II
$25.25-$27.50 hourly
Performs all Maintenance Mechanic I duties in addition to
  • Works a flexible schedule
  • Acts as a technical lead and expert while completing complex repairs and projects


Essential Functions

Industrial Mechanic I:
Performs corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance, repair, replacement, installation, and operation of wastewater process equipment. Repairs, modifies, and rebuilds worn or damaged equipment. Performs complex mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, rebuilding, installation, pipe fitting, plumbing, welding, and fabrication. Operates light, medium, and heavy hand, pneumatic and electric tools, chain pull hoists, power saws, forklifts and overhead cranes. Fabricates, welds, and cuts parts and accessories utilizing welders, torches, and a wide array of hand and power tools. (70%)

Utilizes computer programs to enter data and create maintenance records to ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws. Reads and interprets blueprints and technical manuals to research and order parts and equipment. (20%)

Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, state and federal regulations and maintain professional licensing and certification. Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment. (10%)

Industrial Mechanic II:
Performs advanced corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance, repair, replacement, installation, and operation of wastewater process equipment. Repairs, modifies and rebuilds worn or damaged equipment. Performs complex mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, rebuilding, installation, pipe fitting, plumbing, welding, and fabrication. Operates light, medium, and heavy hand, pneumatic and electric tools, chain pull hoists, power saws, forklifts and overhead cranes. Trains and acts as a mentor to maintenance staff. Acts as lead on large and complex projects. (50%)

Performs advanced design and fabrication of complex mechanical systems, welds and cuts parts and accessories utilizing welders, torches, and a wide array of hand and power tools. Operates and maintains advanced shop fabrication tools, lathes, presses, and milling machines. Works with all types of metals, wood, fiberglass and plastic materials. (20%)

Utilizes computer programs to enter data and create maintenance records to ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws. Reads and interprets blueprints and technical manuals to research and order parts and equipment. Reviews design documents, industry publications, and equipment specifications to advise and make recommendations on equipment selection. Assists in evaluating and setting maintenance standards and safety procedures. Acts as part of the facilities management team to identify maintenance needs, and coordinates complex maintenance projects. (20%)

Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, state and federal regulations, and maintain professional licensing and certification. Provides training and instruction to other staff on the maintenance, operation and safety procedures of industrial wastewater equipment and processes. Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment. (10%)

Requirements

Universal Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Universal Knowledge/Ability
  • Read, interpret, and apply relevant OSHA regulations and guidelines, blueprints, and technical manuals
  • Occupational safety standards and hazards associated with industrial maintenance
  • Pipefitting, welding and fabricating practices along with shop geometry, and related tools and equipment
  • Capable of operating vehicles safely and having an acceptable driving record
  • Operate arc and MIG welders, and oxyacetylene torches
  • Engines, pumps, valves, compressors, electrical circuits, process instrumentation, low and high voltage electrical systems
  • Operate a computer using basic programs and learn and use new programs
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance; and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
Licensing Requirements
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I certificate or Operator in Training (OIT) within six months of employment
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Driving Record Check
  • Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug-Free Workplace regulation, this position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post-Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hiring. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.
This position is required to handle hazardous materials that if mishandled, place the general public at risk of serious injury.

Position Specific Requirements
Industrial Mechanic I:
  • 2 years of experience troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, installing, fitting pipe, plumbing and fabricating in maintenance or industrial setting
Knowledge/Ability
  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
  • Read and interpret technical manuals
  • Maintain state and city required licenses and certificates
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 5 years of maintenance experience in class IV advanced water renewal (wastewater treatment) facility or industrial setting
  • Or a formal degree in maintenance management and practices
  • Wastewater Treatment Operator Class II or higher license
Industrial Mechanic II:
Required Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • 5 years of experience conducting journey-level industrial maintenance and mechanical work, troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, installing and pipe fitting
Knowledge/Ability
  • Capable of operating heavy machinery and equipment
  • Report to facilities in the case of an emergency
  • Work a rotating on-call shift
  • Utilize all tools in an industrial setting
  • Appropriate use of lockout/tag-out safety procedures
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • 10 years of industrial plant
  • Or 5 years of wastewater treatment or other related industrial facility experience
  • Wastewater Treatment Operator Class II license
  • Clear understanding of wastewater process
  • Skill in working with and supervising groups
  • 5 years of experience in welding, metal fabrication, pipefitting and/or HVAC

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds, and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Additional physical efforts include: twisting, bending and operating machinery in confined areas.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, and areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, and work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work on stairs and uneven surfaces, near open tanks and ditches, in industrial areas; are exposed to hydraulic and vehicle hazards, and insects and atmospheric hazards; are subject to slip hazards caused by ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces. Exposure to sewage, methane, hydrogen sulfide and other possible toxic gases and hazardous chemicals and substances.
This position works: Shift work, rotating on-call schedule, and reports to the facility in times of emergencies, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required. Work may be performed/assigned at any of the city's public works facilities. May work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.
