BGIS is currently seeking a US Tax Technology & Automation Consultant to join the team US, Nationwide.

Reporting to the Global Tax Manager, the US Indirect Tax Consultant will be responsible for the maintenance of the tax codes for the different sales tax engines in use and for identifying and implementing opportunities for automation of BGIS corporate group's various US indirect tax obligations. The focus will be on working with the Senior US Tax Analyst to understand the tax logic of BGIS's various revenue streams to align tax codes from different sales tax engines with the different service and product codes of the company's ERP(s). Although the focus is on maintaining the link between the Thomson Reuters sales tax engine with Oracle ERP, projects will require working with the Avalara sales tax engine and different ERPs.

Responsibilities include aligning tax codes, ensuring the data in the ERP reconciles to the sales tax engine, troubleshooting issues as they arise, and any other maintenance of the tax engine, along with other projects that may arise, including acquisition integration.

BGIS US operations require various state sales tax, franchise tax, property tax, and other local tax filings. The US Indirect Tax Consultant will also provide support, if necessary, to the US Indirect Tax Analyst to ensure accurate and timely filings.

The role is not expected to assist with corporate income tax and payroll-related taxes, but experience in this area would be a benefit.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sales Tax Advisory & Sales Tax Engine Maintenance

  • Maintain and enhance the tax configuration settings in Thomson Reuters and Avalara, including streamlining the interaction between Oracle and Thomson Reuters.
  • Troubleshoot issues as they arise, which will include working with IT and Operations teams.
  • Integrates new acquisitions into the BGIS tax engine.
  • Conducts and documents the regular testing of the BGIS sales tax engine for system updates.
  • Regular review of updates to the sales tax engine and correspondences with the local business units of relevant updates.
  • Update sales tax engine for new products and services as required.
  • Regular review of purchase invoices to ensure vendors are charging the appropriate sales tax rates.
Process Adherence / Implementation
  • Actively involved in enhancing internal control procedures in place for the tax team.
  • Ensures compliance with internal control policies.
  • Ensure compliance with system testing processes and related documentation policies.
Continuous Improvement
  • Keeps current on tax legislation and administrative changes.
  • Highlights potential impacts and required changes to business processes and systems.
  • Special projects and/or ad hoc reporting as assigned.
  • Keeps current on the latest updates as it relates to sales tax engines and ERP.
Client Relations
  • Liaises with internal client reporting groups, including directors and controllers to address various questions on US indirect taxes.
  • Comfortable in liaising with both internal and external IT teams and with the technical nature of such discussions.
  • Where required, liaises with external auditors for any questions on US indirect tax accounts.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • University Degree in Business/Accounting or professional certification (e.g., CPA) or computer science.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of US indirect tax experience, with a focus on implementation of sales tax engines.
  • Must have experience with Oracle and Thomson Reuters.
  • Experience with Avalara is a benefit.
  • Must have knowledge of US state sales tax legislation and administrative policies and experience conducting research on the topic.
  • Working knowledge of US state franchise and property tax legislation and administrative policies.
  • Proficient accounting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of commitment to quality work and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated business communication (oral and written) skills, and well-developed independent research skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Proactive and works independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail/accuracy.
  • US Corporate tax experience is an asset.
  • KNIME or other automation tools experience considered an asset.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
  • CPA.
  • Master of Law (LLM) in Taxation.
