Summary

This role has the flexibility to function on a remote basis for those outside the region OR corporate Basking Ridge NJ site based.

The Head of R&D Learning & Development is responsible for defining, building and deploying a transformational Global R&D Strategy for Learning & Development across all functions and levels. Focus areas will include upskilling the organizations scientific, technical and leadership skills along with cross-functional/regional collaboration and team effectiveness, in partnership with the Team Effectiveness Task Force GPM&L & Global HR. This position will foster a culture of continuous learning, providing the canvas and vehicle to facilitate this growth, yielding improved business performance and retention. To enable this paradigm shift, this leader will establish an R&D People Development University anchored to a Learning Management System with Talent/Skill Assessments, Roadmaps, Internal/External Content Curation, Certifications/Rewards and Foundational & Customized Learning Journeys tailored to each R&D Line Function/Role and individual's interests. This position will oversee instructional designers, trainers, learning administrators and other learning talent in understanding current and future state skills required to be effective in each R&D role and translating these needs into meaningful and lasting content. This leader will own, optimize, and manage R&D Learning & Development's day-to-day operations including demand analysis, budgeting, resources, delivery management, communications, evaluation, reporting, content evolution, deployment technologies, and vendor relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy
    • Design appropriate transformation strategy, operating model, governance, roadmap and ways of working to establish a robust enterprise learning organization for R&D leaders, teams and associates in all countries and functions
    • Evaluate and Introduce new L&D programs/approaches on an ongoing basis by anticipation of strategic objective changes, industry tends & proficiency target achievement
    • Evangelizing a culture of lifelong learning & creating the necessary bandwidth & prioritization for associates to come along for the journey
    • Develop strategy around a rewards, recognition & certification program
    • Build a formalized plan for onboarding and job transitioning across all roles/countries
    • Craft a communication/change management plan to drive awareness, alignment and adoption along with a continuous feedback mechanism
    • Establish & Chair an R&D cross-functional learning council to ensure a mechanism to socialize, evaluate and prioritize evolving functional needs
    • Establish approach to collect feedback and generate Metrics around Success, Satisfaction & Skill growth
  • Operational Execution
    • Establish workstreams to support strategy/roadmap/prioritization
    • Execute with strong project management skills, including monitoring work-plans and managing against milestones, knowing what to prioritize and why, knowing who to keep informed, why, and how often, and knowing when to escalate
    • Identify and align the internal resources needed to deliver the strategy, and work with senior leaders to map areas that require additional resources for successful delivery.
    • Coach and ensure effective performance of direct and indirect reports, nurturing an encouraging work environment where everyone has the opportunity to fulfill their potential, share ideas with empowerment to deliver
  • Training Delivery
    • Drive a multi-pronged approach to training delivery leveraging the latest innovations in the delivery of in-person, virtual and device driven training to R&D associates around the world
    • Identify & mentor trainers who can communicate, teach and inspire across all cultures, with a deep understanding of R&D Functions/Roles, Systems and Processes
    • Ensure attendance participation and satisfaction meets agreed targets
    • Maintain interventions and socialization outside of formalized trainings to build momentum through applied day-to-day learning opportunities
    • Capture and apply feedback to improve future training delivery
  • Instructional Design
    • Develop base core curriculum for all R&D Line Functions with agreed functional agnostic critical skills
    • Develop Functional & Role Specific technical and scientific curriculum using real-life scenarios leveraging input from functional SMEs
    • Implement innovative and interactive approaches to Learning Design such a gamification, virtual reality and microlearning in order to create an energy, desire, engagement and satisfaction from associates
    • Develop byte sized learning interventions to ensure retention and application
  • LMS/University Development
    • Establish baseline skill assessment approach for associates to inform learning track, interest match and growth measurement
    • Establish Core and Elective Curriculum along with Talent Roadmaps
    • Build internal certification model based on proficiency gain
    • Establish Rewards & Recognition for milestone and growth achievement
    • Integrate external and internal content in a single universe
    • Design a User Experience which is inviting, energizing and intuitive
  • External Intelligence & Innovation
    • Maintain a pulse and establish relationships with third-party resources, industry peers, vendors and partners to evolve and embed new aged proven and experimental approaches to learning environment
    • Bring in external Speakers/SMEs to shared outside-in knowledge with our associates on industry trends and experiences, new ways of working, skills and mindset
    • Leverage & embed external learning content through tools like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera
    • Guide Build vs Buy Decisions with Vendors
  • R&D and Non-R&D Partnerships
    • Collaborate with Line Functions & Global and Regional HR leaders to ensure alignment on priorities and support of effective deployment strategies
    • Partner closely with L&D functions in HR, QA, Compliance, etc. to avoid duplication and ensure collaboration on delivery, shared learnings and challenges
    • Represent R&D at Daiichi Sankyo Cross-Organization Talent Forum & Chair R&D Cross-Functional Learning Council
    • Obtain & assess needs from other Global R&D Excellence functions through existing functional engagements

Qualifications: Successful candidates will be able to meet the qualifications below with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Education Qualifications (from an accredited college or university)
  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences, HR, Education, Psychology, Organizational Leadership, Business or equivalent work experience is required. Master's Degree is preferred. required
Experience Qualifications
  • 10 or More Years • Minimum Fifteen (15) years of experience within life sciences leading/supporting the delivery of global training programs cross-functionally to associates at all levels is required required
  • 4 or More Years • Minimum 5 years leading a Global Learning Function, including building, grooming and managing a team of trainers/instructional designers is required required
  • 7 or More Years • Proven track record in development and delivery of learning and development strategies from the ground up, in a Pharma R&D environment is required required
  • 7 or More Years • Extensive experience in the end-to-end learning process i.e., organizational development, program design, and delivery, needs analysis and learning metrics and assessment in a global environment along with the latest technologies, approaches and learning management systems preferred
  • • Strong understanding of the research and drug development life cycle processes, roles and systems across R&D functions is required, direct experience in-function a plus preferred
  • 7 or More Years • Experience establishing global business processes, communication/change mgmt./project plans to ensure organizational needs are defined and measured is required required
  • • Experienced communicator who has delivered trainings to all levels in multiple countries using different modes of delivery preferred
  • • Experienced designer with the ability to interpret business needs and translate these into innovative and interactive programs preferred
  • • Experience building Partnerships, Collaboration and Influencing Senior Stakeholders preferred
