The Fleet Technician III is responsible, under general supervision, for performing skilled repairs and maintenance on automobiles, light and heavy duty equipment and light/medium/heavy duty trucks; and performs related duties as required. The job will involve supervisory duties, in the absence of the Shop Manager, of the fellow employees to include but not limited to: Assigning of Work, Issuing Parts, Inventory, Prioritizing day to day activities, verifying repairs, etc. The technician is responsible for providing their own tools to complete repairs and maintenance assigned. May be required to respond to emergency calls as needed for the best interest of the University. The technician is to produce work that meets the high standards of the Transportation Department and to assist in accomplishing the mission of Liberty University.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Inspects, diagnose, and repairs mechanical, electrical, and other defects on automotive vehicles; including, but not limited to tune-ups, relining, and adjusting brakes, tire replacement and balancing, steering gears, starters, generators, universal joints, and minor body repair.

2. Inspects, diagnose, and repairs mechanical, electrical, and other defects on university equipment (Equipment includes, but is not limited to, University assets such as SUV, heavy equipment, mowers, trailers, ATVs, lifts, etc. that exist or may at any time, be added to the University's fleet.).

3. Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using electronic diagnostic automotive equipment and determine appropriate installation, service, and maintenance needs.

4. Diagnose, inspect, and repair air conditioning systems on various vehicles and equipment.

5. Diagnose, inspect, and repair hydraulic systems on multiple types of equipment and vehicles.

6. Rebuild gas/diesel engines.

7. Rebuild automatic and manual transmissions.

8. Maintains records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked through departmental approved means.

9. Must follow departmental approved method of documentation known as the 3 C's: Complaint, Cause, Correction.

10. Provide guidance to Fleet Technicians.

11. Must be able to communicate service and repair problems and procedures with operator and supervisor.

12. Completes work in a professional standard and as meets the University Mission and needs.

13. Shall enhance organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. Such as the participation with various projects and presentations assigned by Management.

14. Assist with implementing and maintaining shop efficiency and policy.

15. Issue parts when Shop Manager or Parts Manager not present.

16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

A high school diploma and 9 years' experience in the repair of automotive equipment in conjunction with an apprenticeship required. Must have a current Class A CDL. State inspectors license and at least 8 ASE certifications required. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in fleet maintenance, inspection and repair practices; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair; safe operation of vehicle/equipment repair and maintenance tools. Proficient in modern methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in repairing automobiles, light trucks, and other gas-powered equipment. MIG and acetylene welding skill is preferred.

Effective communication both verbally and in writing. Ability to intuitively reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Regularly required to lift 50+ pounds. Visits to campus sites, maintenance shops, and associated vendors may be required. Work may be conducted on site of asset failure or at the Transportation Shop. This may include frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, handling, grasping, and the ability to lift, push, pull and carry objects. Some duties involve exposure to inclement weather, noise, dust, oil, chemicals, fumes and traffic hazards. Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required, must be able to pass all requirements to be on Liberty University insurance.
