Summary Statement

Performs journey level maintenance, diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment used by City of Boise and local municipalities. Independent judgment is used to determine and perform repairs.

Essential Functions

Conducts preventive maintenance services on vehicles and equipment per manufacturers' specifications or City of Boise requirements. Performs safety inspection of overall vehicle or equipment. (30%)

Repairs vehicle systems identified through preventative maintenance inspection or as required due to vehicle or equipment failure. Diagnoses and corrects problems. Repairs, rebuilds or replaces components utilizing specialty tools specific to the mechanic trade. (20%)

Installs, diagnoses issues, and repairs specialized equipment and systems. (30%)

Performs fabrication and welding repairs on vehicle and equipment. (10%)

Coordinates services and repairs with department designees. Greets customers and advises on type and estimated cost of repairs, repair status, and time to vehicle completion. Communicates with vendors, dealers and manufacturers to facilitate warranty or sublet repairs. Assists with ordering parts and services. Processes repair orders in the computer system. Verifies accuracy of equipment meter, parts, sublet and services provided along with entry of technician comments to explain course of service or repair. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Requires education and/or experience to attain the following:

Two years technical school, trade school or equivalent military training and four years hands on experience in an automobile, heavy truck, or equipment maintenance/repair organization.

Must be able and willing to furnish own hand tools.

Functional knowledge of and ability to perform hands on in-depth diagnostics, electronic repair, mechanical repair and fabrication on systems common to automobiles, heavy trucks, industrial equipment and Police or Fire emergency vehicles.

Ability to work independently while following City of Boise and division policies and procedures; use shop computerized system; provide customer service to fleet users and City of Boise suppliers; safely operate a variety of vehicles, maintenance, and repair equipment; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City of Boise employees and the public; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Some positions require the ability to obtain an Airport (SIDA) security access; Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake, tank, and passenger endorsement; Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) license for A/C recovery, recycling and recharge; and/or Ada County Air Quality Board emission testing license.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Eight years hands on combined experience in an automobile, heavy truck, or equipment maintenance/repair organization.

Master Level Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) program in automotive and heavy truck. Certification in the Emergency Vehicle Technician Association (EVT) program in the areas of Airfield Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), Fire Truck Electrical, and Emergency Vehicle Technician.

Licensing And Other Requirements
Valid Idaho driver's license.

Special Requirements
All applicants must be able to successfully pass City of Boise background check processes which include reference checks and criminal history checks.

Drug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

This position is required to operate, maintain or inspect emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, or vehicles having a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds and/or life saving equipment used for emergency services.

Additional special requirements, required tests and/or background checks are as follows:

Positions requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) rules regarding random drug testing.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 lbs, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. Also the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. The noise level is frequently very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and are exposed to mechanical, electrical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. May be subject to icy and wet surfaces in parking lot, roadways, or work sites as well as tripping hazards. Work includes protected exposure to bodily fluids, and chemicals.
This position works: occasional call out. Some positions are required to work a mid shift 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
